hi all…
knitting a version of the boston strong keyhole scarf (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/boston-strong-scarf), and i’m wondering about the keyhole section.
is the cable cast-on, as directed, a better option for creating the keyhole after the bind-off row, or in your experiences, does something else, like knitting on, or some version of M1s work better?
thanks!
.
What BO does it say to use? I think a CO that would most nearly match the BO would be a good choice. I see no reason a knitted cast on wouldn’t work OK. I just did one row buttonholes - this is a big buttonhole on the scarf -and the general recommendation for casting on for them is the cable cast on because it gives a firmer edge. That might or might not matter in this case, I don’t think it would. You could even try a huge one row buttonhole.
this specific pattern says:
“Next Row (first keyhole slit): K17, bind off
next 13 sts, k to end.
Next Row: K to the gap created by last row’s
bind offs, use cable cast on method to cast on
13 sts to bridge gap, then k to end.
Continue working in Garter stitch…”
so no mention of which bind off style, and then just a cable cast-on.
but another similar pattern i did, a bias-knit keyhole scarf from a page-a-day pattern calendar, says to knit until your bind off stitches (again, no mention of which style), then do the binding off, then knit until the end of the row, then next row knit until those bound-off stitches, cast-on new stitches (no mention of which style), and knit until the end of the row…
so neither are telling me which bind-off style, and only the boston pattern is saying to do a cable cast-on… so, any preferences?

Techknitter has some suggestions for matching bind offs and cast ons here:
I love the tubular cast on and bind off but I haven’t seen it used with garter stitch, only with ribbing but some of the other ideas may work for you.
This is the most beautiful use of the keyhole pattern that I’ve ever see in a scarf!
