Kangaroo pocket instructions?

Hi,
I’m working on the “Pocket Square” from the Tech Square Afghan, and have already knitted up the Kangaroo Square front portion of the pocket. The original stitches for the pocket were 36 and after some decreasing are now 24 and pattern asked to knit 6 inches, done. Placed the 24 stitches on a holder, turned the square over so now I’m looking at the back of the square.

Here’s where I’m getting confused, there are stitches left on both sides, that weren’t knit while knitting up the front of the kangaroo pocket.
Instructions say:
[B]Turn the square over, and working into the last ridge of the garter stitch lower border, join yarn and knit up 1 stitch behind each of the 36 pocket front stitches. Knit 10 rows in stockinette on these 36 stitches, insert these 36 stitches between the stitches left behind when making the pocket front.[/B]

So, the garter stitch lower border is the border used for the kangaroo pocket, it has a 3 stitch garter on both sides.

Any ideas?

I’ll take a stab. With ndl and yarn, pick up 36 sts in the garter ridge where you started working the pocket (at the base where pocket and border meet). You’ll now be making the ‘back’ of the pocket. (Your previous work was the front.) K 10 rows (these will be directly behind the bottom of the front part of the pocket). These will now be worked between the sts you held to the side while working on the front of the pocket. (side sts+new 36+side sts)

If you were looking from the side (ill above): If the bottom V is the lower ridge, and the branch to the right (red V) is the pocket front, you’re working the back of the pocket by picking up sts at the same point where the front begins (green V). Make sense?

ETA: I’d use a crochet hook to pull up loops thru the existing garter sts and then place them on your right ndl. Being you’re creating a row of sts from the existing fabric, the first row or two might feel a bit clumsy until you’ve worked enough for the knitted piece not to be in the way. (Part of iit will be to the front of your new rows, part of it to the back.)
