I am knitting a sweater for a 4yr old and the back was basket weave but the front panels are k3, p3 adding ribbing trim after. Here is the pattern, (the picture is terrible):

I have one front done and the length looks ok but the width is about 5 inches too small. I know the k3 p3 has something to do with it, burt I am wondering if blocking the fronts is all I need to do to slve the problem? Thanks!
You’re not going to block 1 3/4" into 5".
Looks to me like the front panels and the back panel are the same K3 P3 pattern stitch.
To come out around 2" that would be the original 13 stitches cast on which makes me wonder if you missed,
“Keeping continuity of pat, cast on 2 sts at end of every right side row 6 (6, 7) times, then cast on one st at same edge 8 times, working added sts into pat – 31 (33, 37) sts.”
33 stitches comes out to be around 6" which with the button band should put you right for 1/4 of the 27" finished measurement. In fact the basketweave needs out a bit under guage for the sizes they give.
I did the increase in the pattern and went up to 33 stitches. The relaxed measurement comes out to 3 1/4 inches. Do you think the front is suppossed to be basketweave?
You are right that the picture is not very good but I saved it to my pictures and enlarged it and think the fronts are suppose to be the basket weave as well. It is the same as the K3, P3 ribbing, in a way but I think you just got off pattern on them and they were supposed to be forming the baske weave just like the back. The ribbing will pull way in, whereas if you had the basket weave going it would have turned out to be the right size.
I don’t think blocking is the answer. You should probably do it over, but if you don’t want to you could just leave it. The K3, P3 ribbing you did will stretch quite a bit and may fit. But I think you would really be happier to do it over. When it has you do the first set up row, just remember that you really want the same pattern going as you had in the back and be very careful with the counting there. It is possible they had some mistake in the directions that got you going on ribbing instead of the basket weave, but I’m pretty sure you want the basket weave like on the back.
The added ribbing will look better on the basket weave too instead of ribbing added to ribbing.
thanks, this is my first sweater and making the front basketweave will sure make it look nicer. The sleeves are k1 p1. but the pattern is like 43 or 46 inches wide. Does that sound right?
will I be able to tear or frog this and reuse the yarn or should I start fresh?
THanks
I alway frog and reuse yarn. Unless your yarn is some really strange yarn I’d just rip the whole front out and start over with the same yarn.
Yes, that sounds right.
Thank you so much for the info. I was sure it was me! I am glad I found you guys I am sure I will have more questions. Thanks again!
I’m positive the front is supposed to be basketweave.
I guess because I have my monitor brightness turned down so low I can see it.
Since it’s not basketweave for you I’d say that’s where the problem is.
Frog and reuse. If the yarn can’t handle being frogged once it wouldn’t hold up to a kid.

The pattern is 43 stitches wide where it starts after the ribbing.
Then it increases to 63 stitches.
Arms are just under 1/2 of the chest on adults so yes that sounds about right.
