K2tog yo increase

Hello

I’m new to the forum and I’m having trouble with a knitting pattern.

It’s from the UK August edition of Knit Today magazine and is a lace scarf. I haven’t knitted lace before.

I’m only on the first few rows, every one of which begins with a yo so you end up increasing by one stitch every row so it forms a triangle shape. I currently have 18 stitches on my needle.

It now wants me to increase a row with k2tog yo, then drop the yos on the next row but still end up with an extra stitch.

Here are the instructions:

Wrap row (RS): Yo, K1, *k2tog, yo four times; rep from * to last 3 sts, K3. (19 sts, not including extra loops).

Drop row (WS): Yo, K to end, dropping the extra loops of previous row extra yo sts. 20 sts.

Every time I try I end up with fewer stitches than I had when I had 18! I think I end up with about 12.

Does anyone know where I’m going wrong?

Thank you.

Catherine

welcome to KH!
It may be that you’re dropping all 4 loops of the yarn over in the repeat. The pattern wants you to keep one of the yarn overs and drop the 3 estra loops. (This ia actually all one big yarn over once you’ve dropped the 3 extra loops.) Keeping one yarn over in each repeat will balance the k2tog to maintain the stitch number. The yo at the beginning of the row will give you the increase to 19sts.

Thank you. So does that mean after every k2tog I have to wrap the working yarn around the right hand needle four times? Then drop three of them and keep one of each set of four on the next row?

Yes, after every k2tog, wrap the working yarn 4 times around the righthand needle and leave it there. Go on the to next k2tog and again wrap around the righthand needle. This is a measuring device to make sure you’ve made a large enough yo. On the next row, drop 3 of the loops off the needle, keeping one loop which you’ll knit into. It may seem messy at first but once you stretch out the extra yarn it’ll be fine.

Thank you, got that one sorted out!
