K to 1 st before marker

Help!

Directions are as follows…

1st Row: K11. K2tog. K11 - you will have 23 sts

2nd Row: K12. Place marker on last st. K11
(I knitted 12, added a marker and then knitted 11)

3rd Row: Cast on 8 sts. Knit to 1 st before marker. K3tog. Knit to end of row.

I casted on 8 - then knitted all the way up to the marker - moved the marker to the other needed and knitted 3 together - I am thinking I did this wrong? If I cast on 8, then knit to the first stitch before the marker (leaving one stitch before I hit the marker), then try to knit 3 together, the marker becomes a part of that stitch, and I loose my marker … what am I doing wrong?

Here’s a link to the pattern if you need to see it - I did the pineapple base - this is the part for the pineapple top at the end of the pattern - http://www.yarnspirations.com/pattern/knitting/pineapple-dishcloth
Thank you!!

(I posted a question about this pattern before that was answered - I wasn’t sure if I should have started a new thread or posted it to the old one - please forgive me if I did this wrong! I’m new to this group!)

The directions want you to mark the middle stitch itself, not place a marker on the needle. You can tie a piece of yarn around the stitch or use a marker that opens up to lasso the stitch itself. This way, you won’t be moving the marker but leaving it on the stitch.
When you work the following rows you’ll be able to see that marked stitch and then the line of k3tog will line up with the marked stitch. Knit to one stitch before the marked stitch, k3tog and knit to the end of the row.
You might try this dec if you’d like, instead of the k3tog to give a line up the center of the pineapple.

It was a good idea to start a new thread for this question. Thanks.

Thank you salmonmac!! This greatly helps me!!
