I have no experience in knitting in the round but I am trying on a baby hat and its tougher than I thought. … I was wondering could I just not connect it and knit it flat then seam the hat at the end?
I am really trying to find an easy cute knitted beanie type hat for baby’s for all occasions. Maybe ruffles at the bottom for girls and plain beanie style for a boy.
Here is the pattern:
Yarn: scraps of Lamb’s Pride worsted
Needles: US size 10.5 circulars and dpns. Switch to dpns whenever it becomes necessary.
Cast on 224, and join.
Round 1: K2tog
Round 2: k2tog
Total 56 stitches remain
Knit until hat measures about 3.25" including ruffle.
Decrease for the crown as follows:
Decrease round 1: (k2tog, k5) repeat to end.
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: (k2tog, k4) repeat to end.
Round 4: Knit
Round 5: (k2 tog, k3) repeat to end.
Round 6: Knit
Round 7: (k2tog, k2) repeat to end.
Round 8: Knit
Round 9: (k2tog, k1) repeat to end.
Round 10: Knit
Round 11: K2 tog
Thread yarn through remaining stitches and pull to close.
Hi,
You know, trying to find a flat version might be easier, but the seam may break up the look of the decreasing at the top of the hat that gives the beanie its smooth dome shape.
I am one to try anything with knitting as long as I tell myself that I am doing it for learning purposes. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to cast onto the dpns, so starting with a circular needle is a pretty cool idea in this pattern because it will allow you to start the circle and then transfer it to the double pointed needles after it is already established. Because it is a baby item, it should go faster and if things don’t turn out right, then you haven’t wasted too much time on it. It might take you a few tries to get it right, but would be worth it. The need for a large number of stitches in the beginning is because you are doing a rapid decrease to make a ruffle edge of the hat like a brim. Make sure you know where the round starts and then after the first two rows are done, you can divide the number of stitches by 3 (or 4, depending on the number of needles you have) and transfer them to the needles. And then keep on knitting. Sometimes a tube or pointed baby hat is the best way to practice with dpns. Also, the web sometimes has limitations. I have found that when I get stuck, sometimes I go to my local yarn shop and show them what I am stuck on and they can help you there by showing you.
That’s for the ruffle. Once dec’d to the body of the hat it’s only 56 sts.
Madrina, that patt looks to be quite basic. Not that many rounds, esp being it’s worked on large ndls. Personally I’d not work it flat as doing ITR makes the shaping continuous.
Do you belong to Ravelry? Lots of patts there. Also knittingpatterncentral. Check lionbrand.com. Also, garnstudio.com. Tons of baby/child hats online.
Sure I think you could do it, ruffle and all. CO 2 extra sts for seaming and do the decs one st in from the edge instead of starting them on the first stitich. On the even numbered rows, purl instead of knit (even the p2tog row) and it should work out quite well.
