I have just finished working out the decreases around the neckline and I now have to work the top of the shoulders. I don’t quite understand why the patter says to decrease on both sides 2x8 and 4x9 as on the photo and drawing I can’t see the decease by the neckline. Could all the decreases be done on only one side (sleeves side)?
Currently I have 53 stitches left on my needle.

What is the name of your pattern?
The cast offs are from the sleeve side rather than the neck. Cast off every other row, 8sts from the sleeve edge, work one row plain with no cast off, cast off 8sts again from the sleeve edge. Repeat the sequence binding off 9sts each time on 4 alternate rows. That adds up to 52sts cast off so maybe you have an extra stitch? No matter. You can add it to one of the cast offs.

Thank you for the clarifications, much appreciated. There is only a number on the pattern (m1691) and it says Sweater with front and back V-neck. Can’t wait to finish the first side
