Joining yarn on sleeves

I just took back my knitting project and I need to work on the sleeves. I knitted the jumper on circular needles so I currently have the stitches for the sleeves on a cable. There are no tail of yarn, just my new ball of yarn that I need to join in. This, I am wondering what is the best way to join the ball to the sleeves. Do I just start knitting or do I need to secure the yarn first? Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thank you. Celine

Hello
You can just start knitting. Leave a tail about 10 to 15 cm long to weave in later. You can anchor the tail against your left needle if it helps to get started, and you can also use it to snug up the first couple of stitches later on too. The first one or two stitches will likely be loose until after the second row/round, you can anchor the tail when working into the stitch. Once you get going it will be fine until the end when you weave in the tail.

Hope this helps

It looks like you need to pick up stitches on the bind off. I’d start at the center under the arm and just start picking up stitches with the new yarn. And yes, leave a tail to weave in.

Thank you for all your help and advice.
I have started knitting one of the sleeves now and I have noticed where I increased the stitches, it makes a little hole on both side (more apparent on the side I took the picture of). I have done about 20 rows. Would I be better off to undo it and start again? Thank you  Celine

That often happens. There are several ways to fix this. Probably the easiest is to use the yarn tail (at least on one side) to duplicate stitch over the hole.

In future you might try picking up an extra stitch at each end of the underarm then working two sts together at each end to avoid a gap.
