I am making a Paddington Bear and have knitted all the body, head, arms and legs but I cannot understand the instructions for joining the head and snout. Also the 2 pieces of the body it says. ’ join base dart in each body piece, then sew body pieces together. ’ What does that mean?
I’m guessing the base darts are the V shapes - I think you need to sew the seams together on those for both pieces, then sew the body pieces together.
Thank you for that. It’s all a bit complicated!
Welcome!
I’m just about to knit a teddy bear myself, sadly not Paddington. If you quote a few lines of the part about attaching the snout to the head, maybe we can help. Don’t post a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright.
What is the name of the pattern and the designer or source?
These things really can be, if you’re not good at visualising instructions. Pity they can’t always include diagrams!
Hi! The pattern came with a kit which I got years ago but only just got around to knitting it. It is by Alan Dart and the pattern is no longer available. It has no diagrams , just instructions.
The Making Up instructions are: Join base dart in each body piece, then sew pieces together, leaving a 5cm space open at the top. Stuff firmly, then join opening.
Join front snout seam on head from neck edge to top of snout, then sew gusset into top of head, stuff headfirmly, then sew neck edge to body along head sewing line, placing snout seam in line with centre of front of body piece.
Then it goes onto joining legs. It’s really frustrating!
The last photo in this project may help with seaming.

It looks like the head folds and is seamed from the neck, under the mouth area up to the nose. There’s also seams on either side of the nose which run up under the eyes.
Those seams under the eyes look like the blue lines here:
Thankyou for the info… all done now…
Excellent!
Hello all. I M havung the same problem trying to fix the body and crotch to join legs. Do I sew along the centre then the body and where fo I join the legs Help. I M VERY CONFUSED. THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE IF YIU HZVE FOME SORT IF DIAGRAM.
Welcome to the forum!
Can you post a photo or two of where you need to seam?
It may help to post a few lines of the directions for finishing and seaming. Don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright please.
The last photo here shows the pieces spread out before seaming. I’m guessing that the body is seamed and the legs are then attached but that’s only a guess.

Thanks for your help the instructions say
Join centre crotch seals.sew body pièces together leaving 5cms Open at top suff formule.then join opening.(does that mean close or join to…) many thanks
It looks like there is a seam here (blue arrow) that should be sewn first. It may well continue around the crotch to the back (that’s the center crotch seam).
That may leave the body bottom to be sewn up and finally the legs attached. Alternatively, from the look of the legs they may be left open at the top. After stuffing they can be seamed to the side of the body. It looks like there is an opening there for the legs. If there’s not an opening, then sew around the legs joining them to the body.
You might pin or baste these seams first to see if they work and if they attach to the body the way you would like if not the way nature intended.
Really the boots and hat are so adorable, it’s tempting to make this version of Paddington.
Hi nearly finished just wondering how to fix the toggles (are they just for show) many thanks for your help.
Pam
The toggles on one side may be permanently sewn onto the tabs. It looks like the tab without a buttonhole and button are sewn to the jacket. On the other side, if there’s a buttonhole then the button or toggle would be sewn to the jacket directly.
It depends on whether someone is going to play with this Paddington and take the jacket on and off or he’s going to sit on display. If he’s not going to be played with, both sets of toggles and tabs could be permanently sewn in place without buttonholes.
Seems like you’re in the finishing stages here. That’s great progress!
Many thanks for your help gradually getting there.
Have a great day.
