Joining on DPN's

Hi, I am beginning leg warmers. I casted on 40 stitches 10 on each DPN. Now 3 sides are connected. Do I have to do something to connect the fourth side or just begin with the pattern and that will connect it? It says join and begin the twisted rib stitch.

Just start knitting with the empty needle - that’s joining.

I like to cast on one extra and K2tog to join.
