Joining Mitered Squares

I’m new at knitting mitered squares, I like them, but I’m having a terrible time joining them. I picked up sts on the right side of a completed m-square, but then the “picked up” stitches showed up on the right side of the square. I thought I was supposed to start joining the next square by picking up stitches on the right border.
Instead of picking up and joining as you go, what would be a fairly neat, invisible way to join loose mitered squares into something such as a scarf?

I myself didn’t try to knit mitered blankets and hopefully this video on YouTube explaining technique of joining squares will answer your question.
Have a fun knitting and please show us pictures when finish

I’m not entirely familiar with mitered squares but with picking up stitches I find it matters which direction you are going. Right to left or left to right. If you’re getting the raw edge at the front try starting at the other end and working back. You can turn the work but still be picking up from the front side.

I’m not sure if you’re trying to join separate mitred squares of knitting the new square onto an existing square?

I’ve made three blankets for each of my kids and i used a different join each time! With mitred squares, I joined them using mattress stitch. With large squares, I joined them with a crochet chain. The third was entrelac so I picked up stitches and joined as I go. When picking up new stitches, I used a much smaller needle as this gave a tighter and neater join.

Hope this helps

I’ve watched that a few times, and I’m still making a mistake. Not sure what in the world I’m doing wrong.

I’m not sure what a mattress stitch is, but I’ll look on youtube. Thats a good idea, using smaller needles. I’ve not tried joining with a crochet chain, I’ll look that up on youtube as well. Great info.

Can you post a picture of your work, so maybe we can see what’s going wrong? How are you picking up stitches? If you’re inserting your needle from the front side and picking up stitches, the ridge should appear on the back of the work.

This tutorial is photos rather than video. She’s picking up on the left edge, but the technique is the same.
