Joining in the round when using alternate cable cast on for 2x2 ribbing

The Whalsey Gansey bottom up sweater calls for casting on 168 stitches for 2x2 rib. My question is, because you have to switch the knit stitches with the purl stitches off the left hand needle on the second row, do you still join in the round on the very stitch of the second row? Does this question even make sense?

And as you can see I haven’t even started the actual difficult part of the pattern…oy vey.

I’m not understanding why you want to switch the knit stitch with the purl sts on the second row? It looks like straight 2x2 rib.

I was thinking of using the alternate cable cast on where the first row is cast on k1, p1 but on the second row, you switch the k stitch with the p each time so you have two knits and two purls as required. But, I found in doing my swatch that the yarn was just too bulky to mess with this idea, so I decided to just use the regular, long tail cast on.

If I understand (huge if!) you mean that working flat you are looking at the purl side of knits and knit side of purls when you turn your work to work flat. The pattern looks to be knit in the round so that shouldn’t matter unless you want to knit a row flat before joining to avoid twisting. If that’s it then maybe restating the question would help.

The video shows the alternate cable cast on for 2x2 rib (about 7:00min) where you switch knits and purls on the second row or round. It’s a bit fiddley.

salmonmac,
I just ordered the worsted yarn for the project, so when I get it, I will try this. Thank you, once again for your help and encouragement.

Regardless of the cast on method I personally would leave a tail long enough to neaten up the join at the end.
