Japanese Short Rows WITHOUT Pins?

Does anyone know how to do this?? Have you found any online tutorials that teach how to FIND the stitches used in Japanese short rows? I know the pins are supposed to help you find the stitches, but with my current project I end up using 20+ pins at a time to hold stitches. I would love to learn how to find the correct stitches (hard just looking at it on my own).

Suggestions??

I really like the way the Japanese short rows look in the Lizard Ridge afghan pattern, rather than my wrap & turns, which leave unsightly holes and randomly stretched yarns across the front of my work (I am twisting some stitches, I fear).

The Knitter’s Handbook by Montse Stanley has a couple of drawings that show which strands to pick up. (She calls it “catch” instead of Japanese short rows.) I bet you could make similar “cheat sheets” by taking snapshots of the location of the pins at the point where you pick up the strand. You could then use them as guides to know which strand to pick up when you’re not using a pin. KWIM? You’d need one for knit and one for purl.

I actually like using the pins since it gives me a little handle to use to pick up the strand and put it on the needle. But I could see how it could get crowded if you need a lot of them.

You could try reading this (very clear) tutorial:

Then, if you scroll down to the last comment, there’s another suggestion using tiny rubber bands to mark the spots instead of pins.
Hope this helps a little…
Good Luck
