January KAL: Seamless blanket>planning updates

No problem!

If you weave your ends neatly, it doesn’t look bad at all, IMHO. You can see here a photo of a log cabin blanket i made and i took photos of the back too. I think it looks pretty ok. Slipping the first stitch and purling the last one will definitely make a neater edge and make it easier to pick up stitches for the next blocks:thumbsup:.

I don’t like the back either which is something that has kept me from doing many of the block patterns. Weaving in the ends neatly will help, but you will always have the purl bump color change. It’s the nature of the beast though regardless of the type you do unless you do it in one piece.

There’s a Log Cabin Kal over at Ravelry, and I’ve been reading quite a bit in it. There are some great tips on how to leave the stitches ‘live’, instead of binding off and picking up again.

Quite a few experienced Log Cabiners have shared some good tips, which I will post in our KAL once it gets rollin’.

If you are already a Raveler, there is a LOG CABIN KAL in the Mason-Dixon Group. It has 256 posts, some as recent as the past two weeks, so people are keeping it alive. It would be helpful if we read all of those posts before our Jan KAL.

When our KAL gets rollin’, I’ll take a roll call…and ask if everyone is a Raveler. If not, then we who are Ravelers could copy/paste “tips” (in our KH-KAL) that we think will be helpful to us all!

I found this info on making flat seam backs for the LC. It’s for Rav only…sorry.

I think I will dig out the log cabin blanket I started way back in June when Dustinac hosted the Log Cabin Kal. really liked working on it at the time, but then July started and it was sort of put away.
I have one skein of about 5-6 Caron Simply brites and will just keep going till I run out. It should be just big enough for my 2 year old, so she can cuddle up with it on the sofa.

GOOD IDEA, Karina! Get that WIP moved over to the FO’s!

Hi, I’ve wanted to do the Log Cabin ever since I got my Mason-Dixon book. I just found this thread today, but, I’ll work hard and catch up if there’s room
I definitely have enough stash to get a good start on it.:aww:

April

There’s always room! We will start the the Seamless Blanket on January 1st! I’ll post a fresh new thread for the KAL! This thread is just a preliminary…to give everyone a running start…let’s call it HIT THE GROUND RUNNING! :roflhard:

Hi Everyone,

I have a friend that will be delivering a baby in March. Her shower is at the end of January. I picked out my yarn today. I chose Plymouth Encore. The needle that is recommended (8) is larger than the yarn that the pattern calls for. I know that knitting on the 8’s will make the blanket larger but do you think that it will matter?

The best thing to do is: knit a garter stitch swatch with the US8 that the yarn recommends…and compare the results with the LOG CABIN gauge required:

21 stitches and 42 rows = 4 inches in Garter Stitch

I have knit with Plymouth ENCORE and I love it…however, I don’t think a US6 needle would give a very nice garter stitch fabric.

But you could try it, and also a US7, too.

I appreciate your hesitancy. I wouldn’t want my baby blanket to be big enough for the jolly green giant either! If the blanket were for myself I might not care as much…but for a GIFT…well then, I would want it to be about the right size for a baby, too!

Let us know what your swatches reveal, please! :waving:

I will do a guage. I just dislike making one sooooo much.

I’m in, too. Have the first Mason-Dixon book, the second one is on it’s way. Think I’ll do the Moderne Log Cabin, with the type of yarn they suggest.

Dollyce, your new projects are really pretty! However, my friend, I’d have to ADD two inches to the sweater if making it for myself. :stuck_out_tongue:

I started the log cabin afghan earlier this year. Maybe I’ll join in this KAL and finish it.

Oh please do join us! Your can ‘blaze trail’ for us!
We’ll be begging you to post photos of ANYTHING you have done!

For those of you who are going to knit the MODERNE BABY BLANKET Log Cabin, here is a memo that I read over at Ravelry, posted by a Rav member who seems to be up on her corrections facts. So for what it’s worth, I printed her MEMO so that when I am knitting the baby blanket size, I will refer to her MEMO and compare it with what the book says, and what the ‘official errata’ notes say.

Here is her MEMO (in blue type):

ERRATA for Moderne Baby Blanket Log Cabin
(MEMO posted by a Ravelry member)
The errata published on randomhouse.com is still incorrect – they only fixed part of the problem. I just emailed them the following:
While I appreciate your attempt to publish the pattern correction for the Moderne Baby Blanket, I’m afraid the instructions still aren’t correct.
I am referring to the errata published here:
http://www.randomhouse.com/crown/pottercraft/errata/mason…
The current correction reads:
Moderne Baby Blanket (page 79)
Second paragraph of Block 9 should read, “Turn work so that the edge containing Blocks 1, 3, 5, and 7 is at top, RS facing. Place marker 63 garter ridges from the edge. Using D, pick up 54 sts along row ends, starting at Block 7 and ending at the marker. Joining B, pick up 54 sts along row ends to end (108 sts). Keeping colors consistent, K 54 garter ridges. BO.
However, it should read:
Moderne Baby Blanket (page 79)
Second paragraph of Block 9 should read, “Turn work so that the edge containing Blocks 1, 3, 5, and 7 is at top, RS facing. Place marker 63 garter ridges from the edge. Using D, pick up 63 sts along row ends, starting at Block 7 and ending at the marker. Joining B, pick up 63 sts along row ends to end (126 sts). Keeping colors consistent, K 54 garter ridges. BO.
The math works out as follows:
Stitches picked up in garter ridges of Block 1 = 36
Stitches picked up in garter ridges of Block 3 = 36
Stitches picked up in garter ridges of Block 5 = 18
Stitches picked up in garter ridges of Block 7 = 36
Total stitches picked up = 126
Half of total stitches picked up in Color D = 63
Half of total stitches picked up in Color B = 63

I hope this helps in getting the correct revisions published on your site as soon as possible. Thanks.

I picked up the Mason Dixon book today from my library (i request the books online and they call me when they come in).

Hey, way to go! That’s great!

Hi
I would love to make a seamless blanket with you. I am new to this web site. It is awesome! Please let me know what I have to do to join.
Thank you

Say the word, and you are joined! :grphug:

Between now and Jan 1…get your similar weight yarns lined up…and get that pattern in hand.

I will start a fresh new thread for our Seamless Stashghan for the KnittingHelp January KAL! This thread will be closed to further postings. We can read back through it…but we’ll start fresh for the KAL!

HAPPY TO HAVE YOU!!! :muah:
