Hi everybody, have just discovered the wool I’m knitting a hoodie with is the wrong one. I have been using a DK pattern with number 4 needles and realise although it was sold as DK it is actually aran.
My question is, can I unpick and do the same pattern with number 5 needles? Thank you.
Technically, yes, although it will come out a larger size. You might do a swatch with the #5s and compare your gauge to what you’ve already knit. Depending on the size of the hoodie, it might not make too much difference. Or you could use the next size smaller pattern, perhaps…there may be maths in your future!
You might also need to check the length in meters you have against what you need. 100g of aran might be shorter than 100g of dk. Better to find out sooner rather than later if you need to buy more of the same dye lot.
Welcome to KH. You need to know your stitch gauge. If you you’ve done a large enough piece of knitting you can measure your stitch gauge on it to compare with the gauge given in the pattern. Otherwise the best thing is to knit a gauge swatch at least 6"x6". If you’re using thicker yarn, knitting to gauge might make a stiffer than desirable fabric. Then you’ll need the math @Creations mentions to work it out.
Can you give us the name of your pattern or a link to it online? That’s really helpful. Gauge is the number of stitches and/or rows measured over a specified length given in inches or centimeters. Many patterns will show gauge of so many stitches and rows over 4"/10 cm. @salmonmac is IMO best at explaining these things. Here’s a link that might give you some help. It’s just one I found, not a site I’ve used a lot.
Thank you very much for your help Grumpygramma. The pattern is so old that I don’t know the name but with your advice about gagues I think I’ve sorted it.
