Hello! I am making the Aelita by Caledonia dreaming and I’m loving it but I have a question. The ribbing at the bottom of the body is a cable knit section (purl 2, knit 6), I have just finished this and it says to do an Italian bind off and links to a video explaining a 2by2 Italian bind off. How would this work for this pattern seeing as the ribbing is purl 2, knit 6 repeated and not alternating knit 2 purl 2 like is shown in the video?
Nice sweater you are making. I will let someone else give correct answer, never did Italian bind of.
Good luck
There are a few mentions on ravelry of the question over the bind off and also comments about the designer not responding to questions to clarify (poor customer service in my opinion).
It seems from reading through notes that the 2 by 2 italian bind off should be used.
You may need to slip your first stitches and begin the bind off with 2 knits, moving the beginning of the round, I can’t imagine this would pose a huge problem and would allow you to follow directions for beginning with 2 knits.
Treat the 6 knits as k2 p2 k2, then the purls as the p2. You might want to place a marker on each of the centre 2 sts of the k6 to remind you to treat them as purls, or a guide thread could be woven in and out every 2 stitches and removed as you go along. I find I have to concentrate on this bind off, I’m not sure I’d really want to have to remember to pretend 2 knits are 2 purls. Another method noted on ravelry is to seperate the stitches onto 2 left needles before starting, this way you can place the centre 2 knits onto the “purl needle“ and it physically moves them to remind you to treat as purls.
A life line might be a good idea before you start, and/or a practice on a swatch.
Good luck
Welcome to KH!
This is such a lovely, graceful sweater.
There are a couple of videos that may help. They were recommended by one of the proect knitters.
They give you the choice of working the set up rows for the bind off (more of a tubular varient) or going striaght to the grafted bind off. In either case the 6 knit sts of the cable will become k2,p2,k2 and so work themselves into a 2x2 rib. It actually works out quite nicely and gives a pretty finish to the rib.
Thank you so much!
