Issue with armholes cast off - help please :(

Heya! I followed the pattern saying “Cast off stitches for the armholes as follows: Cast off the first 4 stitches, work the next 54 stitches (= front piece), cast off 8 stitches, work the next 54 stitches (= back piece) and cast off the last 4 stitches on the round.” But after casting off the last 4 I was left with this single stitch (next to the marker) and no clue what to do next? Wondering if anyone might be able to help me please? :’( Thank you!! x

If it helps in any way the next step of the pattern would be to start working the back piece as follows "Start from the wrong side and work stocking stitch back and forth – AT THE SAME TIME cast off for the armholes at the beginning of each row in each side as follows: Cast off 2 stitches 1 time, and cast off 1 stitch 1 time = 40-44-48-50-54-58 stitches.

Welcome to KH!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
It’s a mystery why patterns are written this way. You do sometimes see it but it always needs to be corrected.
The best thing to do is to take out the last row (painful as that is) and bind off 4sts before the marker then continue binding off 4sts after the marker. Work the naxt 54sts, cast off 8sts work the next 54sts up to the gap near the BOR marker. Your yarn will be attached to the back ready to work back and forth on it.
You can take out the row one stitch at a time (tinking) to make sure you don’t lose a stitch if you’d like:

If you’d prefer, you can cut the current working yarn leaving about a 6" tail to weave in later. Attach the new end of yarn (again leaving a tail to weave in) to the back of the sweater and proceed with the knitting.

Hi, thank you so much for your help. It was driving me crazy. Undoing it just now… I’m following this pattern for a child’s vest: https://www.garnstudio.com/pattern.php?id=10141 but now wondering it isn’t that good and I’m going to get into trouble again down the line… :frowning:

Just glancing over the pattern, it seems fine. If anything, Drops patterns sometimes over specify in an effort to be clear.
As I mentioned, this odd split bind off at the armhole is not unusual in patterns. The first question at the bottom of the pattern is in regard to this very same problem. The Drops answer is to cut the yarn. (Not the neatest solution.) This same direction may well crop up again in another pattern and now you’ll be ready for it. Darling vest. Enjoy working it!

What great colourful stripes! What yarn fo you have?
I hope to see this project finished, it’s going to look a treat!

The wording of the armhole cast offs makes no sense but you will fix it and the top will be great.

I’ll share a photo once it’s finished, just realised the stripes are going to change size at the top but I think it’ll still look sweet! I’ll find out the name of the yarn for you too
