Is there interest in a spinning forum?

I wanted to see if anyone else would actually post in one before I bugged Amy about it.

My wheel didn’t come today ( :crying: ), but I did get some fantastic Lamb’s Pride Roving. :happydance:

I’m toying with the idea, I would love to read about other people’s spinning in the meantime…

I’d be interested. I need the motivation.

I’m interested, too! I’m a complete noob–as in I’m just about to start as soon as I get a spindle! (Too poor for a wheel…right now, anyway)

I thought I was too poor for a wheel, but keep an eye on ebay. You will be suprised.

RE: the spindle. I’ve seen folks who can rock a spindle, and then folks who make fantastic yarn on wheels but can’t spindle for their life. I am of the latter group. I would really suggest making a CD spindle (with 2 cd’s for weight) before buying one. I have a nice Louet spindle that I am giving to my nieces because I stink at it. :??

I’ve heard that about the spindle, that it definitely does not work for everyone. Problem is, I have no tools and none remotely nearby with which to construct a spindle of my own. (I saved the knitty gritty episode that shows how to do it…and how to spin with a spindle.) I found a cheap one at a shop nearby here–around $15, if memory serves.

I will, though, check ebay for a wheel–thanks! It never occurs to me to check ebay for knitting things…dunno why since I got by Boyes there!

How do you do that? :??

Here’s how to DIY.

Here are the directions from the Knitty Gritty episode on spinning. It’s not that hard if you have the tools!

Thanks both of you for the site. I don’t get the DIY network here, so I often forget about Knitty Gritty until someone here mentions an episode! I’ve got it bookmarked and the next time I’m at Home Depot I’ll pick up the stuff I need to make my own… then it’s off to Ram Wools or my other LYS for some roving to try spinning… OH GAWD!!! just what I need… ANOTHER hobby! :roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:

:roflhard: :roflhard:

I know what you mean…I neglect everything just to knit…once the spinning starts, well…

SHHHH It’s not another hobby, it’s a ‘precursor’ to knitting… How ELSE would I be able to sell the idea to my hubby???

:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:

Brilliant!

Definitely a precursor. :?

In fact, my dh and I had this conversation:

Me: I’m going to start spinning yarn!

dh: why? you can buy any yarn you want.

Me: well, I can buy a sweater at the store rather than knit one.
dh:

dh: but you can shape the stuff you knit to fit you.

Me: yeah, but if I spin and dye the yarn I can have creative control from the beginning.

dh: huh?

Me: It ends up being cheaper.

dh: Well then, that is a different story.

Nope…not a new craft

Hmm… I like the way you guys think and justify it. For right now I’m trying to figger out a way to get a swift and ball winder. Knitting is still a relatively new hobby for me, and DH is just getting used to me paying as much for wool as I used to for crochet thread!

I, too, need to work in the swift and ball winder…once you find a good argument for them, please share! Though I’ve spent so much money on yarn in the last month that I think I’ll hold off a wee bit on those…maybe until my birthday next month! :rofling:

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! Say that out loud and see how it sounds…I wonder what you DH was thinking?! The part that tickled me was “spin and dye”…someone could mistake that for “spin and die”! :roflhard:

I would love to see some stuff on spinning here! I think it would be great. I got an Ashford Kiwi for Christmas and I’m having so much fun spinning with it (when I’m not cursing at the quality of my yarn, that is).

I looked at wheels on ebay last night. I saw what might be considered good deals, but I must say that I’m so ignorant, I don’t even know what a good deal is–Ven, if you want to help, that would be great.

sure Ang, I’d be glad to.
