Thank you for the extensions! I plan to cast on tonight for my
egeblad doily and I’ll use the extensions on that as well. I thought
it would make a nice gift actually, the doily for a table top and
the lap blanket 
I just finished test knitting the doily with spiral
and need to block it so I’m ready to get another project underway.
Oh no! I said I would never get into knitting lace…what happened??

Have any of you actually knitted a small doily? I’ve crocheted a couple but not knitted one.
It’s done! I still have to block it but I finished the knitting tonight. I have to say, I am in mad love with the crochet bind off. It took me about an hour to do it! I only chained 5 instead of 8 and it looks good.
I did the original pattern rounds (88) and it’s 44" unblocked!
I’ve never knitted a small doily. I’ve knitted other lace, but always with sock yarn. I like the process of knitting lace designs and the texture of the fabric, but not dainty white lace.

Unblocked photos off the needles are on Ravelry! I am going to wet block this one for sure, so I won’t have photos of the final product until tomorrow night at the earliest. It’s much less beret-shaped than the Hemlock and actually resembles a blanket already.

i was wondering how silk blocks. is it worth trying one of these in a silk yarn. would you have to use bigger needles or smaller to make allowances for the yarn not being as flexible as wool?
Interesting question. I don’t know how many bulky silk yarns there are, but I went and read a bunch of reviews on Knitter’s Review, just to see how silk behaves in blends. The general consensus is it has no elasticity at all and generally “blocks” to the same shape it was knitted. However, if you get wool in the mix, the wool is elastic and may need some blocking. Alpaca doesn’t block either, so a blend that uses alpaca is going to be more difficult to shape. Also, some silk yarns are textured and splitty, but the more tightly spun yarns show gauge changes clearly. Lace hides that better than stockinette, but it’s still something to consider.
I think it also depends on what you want the blanket for. I wanted a warm tv-watching blanket, so fluffy wool is absolutely perfect. It keeps me warm and the holes aren’t an issue because the more solid parts of the blanket trap heat so effectively. I plan to use my blanket and not just display it. Some silk blends are much more fragile and susceptible to pilling. If you can’t find a bulky blend, you’ll use a fair amount of yarn and it could be expensive.
On the plus side for silk, it’s shimmery and drapes and is luscious. Clara’s reviews were so wonderful that I wanted to rush out and buy some silk yarns, but she never talked about a lace blanket on this scale, mostly due to the expense. Something like Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran would possibly be a good yarn to try, but even at Webs, it’s $9 a ball and you’d need 7 or more balls to make a blanket.
If you try silk, I’d love to hear your opinions of it, especially for a project like this. I swoon over balls of silk yarn at my LYS but it’s always so spendy. I have champagne tastes on a tap water budget.
This is the silk yarn that I have, bought of ebay. so not expensive and have five hanks of it. thought i could use it for this project just to see if it would work, as long as it will lay flat when done. can’t wait for my yarn to arrive in a couple of weeks. I want to start one of these now.

Wow, is that 100% silk? It looks like lovely yarn and I was swooning over some of the other colors that seller had. I think if you start knitting the center, you’ll get an idea of how the silk is going to handle the pattern.
If you try different gauges, will you take photos to share? I’m really intrigued now.

I just started row 100 of the extension. Whew! There are a lot of stitches in each round. These doilies are deceiving. The beginning goes so fast, and then when you get to the long rounds, 
! I think this is why I never did one in thin yarn. All those stitches for a doily?

wow they are all stunning! Thank you Mary for the extension…I’ve been waiting for one to start this…also I have always wanted to make thisone but never had a need for doilies…I’m going to try it too…as soon as I can…right now my knitting needles seem to be very busy 
I think I will have one or another on the needles for a long time to come. I would not really like to make them as doilies but I love them as blankets.

going over your blocking procedure because I’m still very much a
novice when it comes to lace and that really helped alot! I think
I can do this
I’m in the middle of my test knit with lace weight yarn and like
the pattern so far. My doily is going to be black because that is
what I had in my stash so might look a bit odd but oh well!
