Interpreting a pattern

Hello! I have decided to finally try knitting a sweater and I chose a Jody Long pattern “Amanta”. I started with 6 rows of garter stitch for size 4-5 and the first paragraph of instructions is very confusing to me.

“BACK

Using 3.25 mm (US 3) needles cast on 54 [62: 70: 76: 84:

90: 98: 106] sts.

Work in g st for 6 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

Change to 4 mm (US 6) needles.

Beg with a K row, now work in st st as folls:

Dec 1 st at each end of 7th [9th: 5th: 9th: 7th: 11th: 9th:

5th] and 1 [2: 3: 3: 4: 4: 5: 6] foll 10th rows. 50 [56: 62: 68:

74: 80: 86: 92] sts. **This is the part I don’t understand. Decrease 1 stitch at the end of the 7th and 4 following 10th rows (**resulting in a total of 74 stitches).

I would appreciate any input. Thanks,

Barb

Hello
Maybe this pattern?

Very cute.

Beginning with a knit row, call this row 1, all right side rows will be knit and all wrong side rows will be purled for stockinette stitch.
Decrease at each end of row 7, 17, 27, 37, 47
That’s 2 sts decreased in each dec row, one at the beginning and one at the end of the row.
Total 10 stitches decreased. 74 sts remain.

Let us know how you get on. We’d love to see your progress pics too.

Thank you and yes, this is the pattern. Thank you for your clear response but I have one more question.

“Dec 1 st at each end of 7th [9th: 5th: 9th: 7th: 11th: 9th:

5th] and 1 [2: 3: 3: 4: 4: 5: 6] foll 10th rows.” It’s the 4 that is throwing me off.
Sorry to bother.:pink_heart:

There’s no limit to how many questions you can ask, and this is the best way to learn how to read different patterns.

Dec each end of the 7th row (row 7)
Then dec each end of the four following 10th rows.
(1) After row 7 the 10th row which follows it is row 17
(2) After row 17 the 10th row which follows it is row 27
(3) After row 27, the 10th row is row 37
(4) After 37 the 10th row is row 47

You have now counted to row 7 once
And you have counted to the following 10th row four times (worded as 4 following 10th rows)

See if this makes more sense. I hope you get the “aha” moment but if not, do say, someone else may word things differently and that might be what you need to make it click.

Ah :light_bulb: yes, that makes sense. Thanks so much. I’m going to try this tonight.
