Instruction says to "fasten off old colour" ... how do I do that and I continue with new colour?

Just taught myself the rudiments of crocheting using YouTube clips. I’m trying to follow this pattern
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cozy-man-ghan
I don’t know how to follow the instructions in row 4 to “fasten off old colour”.
I’ve looked at YouTube clips and have figured out that I can either “carry” the tails (of the old and new colours) or I can fasten off the old colour but then have nowhere to put the new colour - ???
I think the instructions are to - somehow - tie a knot so the old colour is secure, and then continue with the new one. Can anyone help with a simple explanation of exactly how to do this?
Many thanks!

You may have already seen this video but it seemed pretty useful

Congratulations on learning to crochet!!! :+1:  I learned from a little book and was thrilled to see crochet videos when I got online years later.

I found a video that uses sc but shows how to change colors as in the pattern. Please ignore the word ‘correct’ as there are different ways of doing things and there is rarely if ever one ‘correct’ way to do things.
Correct Way to Change Yarn Color in Crochet: Beginner Course: Lesson #7

If you just fasten off the old color by pulling the yarn through to complete the stitch you can just cut it. Then the new yarn can be joined with a slip stitch, you don’t need a knot. The video shows a piece worked in the round but it’s the same working in rows - you’d join the new color by working into the top of the last stitch from the previous row and then doing your turning chains.
Attach yarn with a slip stitch - Crochet Fundamentals #12

I get nervous any time I have to cut yarn. What if I realize I made a mistake and now the yarn’s been cut and I missed stitches and won’t have enough to fix it? I figured out that I can leave the old yarn uncut until I’m ready to use it again. I just drop it and continue on with the new color. It can be awkward sometimes but it’s saved me more than once from having problems.

I hope this helps. Others are better at explaining so don’t despair.

Congrats for learning new skill👏
Im doing same as GG when switch colors. In the end is pain … with all tails left to waive.
Have a fun and come back if you need any help or just to verify something in the pattern.
We woul like to see finished project :grinning:

I work over the tails, at least one of the videos I linked shows it. Works for me. If the yarn is really slippery I’ll leave enough tail to weave in going another direction but that’s unusual. I’m not fond of slippery yarns.

If you change to the new color as you make the last stitch with the old color, you’re all set to go on the next row. That’s why at the end of Row 4, it says " change to next color in color sequence in last sc ". You’ll finish that last stitch with the new color, then turn and begin Row 5 with " ch1, *sc in next 2sc… "

I see that you spell it “colour”. Are you aware that crochet abbreviations are different in the US and UK? This pattern has sc (single crochet), which doesn’t exist in British patterns. US sc = UK dc. It can get confusing!
