Increasing in broken rib stitch

I have been knitting a sweater in broken rib stitch (1 X 1 ribbing on the front, purl the back side). I have now come to the sleeve portion, and am either thinking too much or the directions are truly confusing.
The 1 X 1 ribbing is based on a multiple of two sts, and the broken rib is 2 sts plus one.
Here’s how the directions read:
CO 53 sts; work 1/2" in 1x1 rib, end WS row. Shape Sleeve: (RS) Inc 1 st at each side on this row, then EOR 2 times, then every 4 rows 26 times, working inc sts in 1 X 1 Rib as they become available–111 sts.

Ok, no where does it tell you to switch to broken rib, but I’m assuming since one is working an odd number of sts, that after the cuff is knitted in 1 X 1 rib, the sleeve is in broken rib. Then,
How the heck do you increase in 1 X 1 ribbing? I’ve tried just increasing on the third stitch on the row (ending up with two knit stitches together), and then on the third to last stitch on the row (another 2 knit sts together). Every time I do another increase, I end up with more and more knit sts together. I have a little test sleeve going to try all of this stuff on, and boy does it look pathetic.
Anyway, if someone can help with the increase problem I would be most grateful.

To increase on the sleeve ribbing, just increase in the last stitch and then work them in ribbing on the next row. That’s the "as they become available’ part.

The ribbing will expand outward, so if you want to you can work a pk into the first stitch and a kp into the last stitch; or a kp into the first and pk into the last, depending on where in the ribbing you are.

Even if you just k into the front and back of the first and last stitch, and work them in ribbing on the next row, they’ll blend into the seam just fine.
