I'm so stumped. Please help me!

I just started this lovely piece of work BrookeNelson.com - Brooke's Column of Leaves Knitted Scarf - Free Pattern and for the life of me I don’t get

(RS) slip 1 knitwise, knit across until last stitch, slip 1 knitwise

I don’t get slip 1 knitwise as the last stitch. How does that work? I know HOW to do it I just don’t get how it works in the next row.

It might seem odd, but if that’s what the pattern says then I’d just go with it. What is the next row’s instruction??

Slipping a stitch knitwise means to slip the needle under the loop as if you were going to knit, but take it off w/o knitting it.

It’s a repetion of:

(WS) p1, knit across until last stitch, p1
(RS) slip 1 knitwise, knit across until last stitch, slip 1 knitwise

I know that part, I just don’t get what happens in the row after that. How it all works.

She’s purling the first stitch of the next row. I think you are going to be fine. your just making a nice neat edge.

Trust the pattern…you will see how it works out

Duh, I guess I could look at the pattern myself - you linked it, after all

The slipping of the stitches is just to make a nice edge on the scarf. A lot of times people will slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch of every row to make a nice edge. This is just another way to do it, I guess. You slip knitwise the first and last stitch of every right side row, and looks like you purl the first and last stitch of every wrong side row.

Thanks!! It just looks odd to me. I’ll see how this goes.

That’s a lovely pattern, by the way! Must add it to my list.

It really is. The minute I saw it, I started it.

Yum! I’m printing it now!

I’m having another issue. I’m ending up with an extra stitch once I get into the actual leaf pattern and I think it comes from this:

Row 1 (RS): [Edge pattern] Slip 1 knitwise, k2, slip 1, k1, psso, yo, k2, [Leaf pattern] p2, K7, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, p1, yo, k1, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, k7, p2, [Edge pattern] slip 1, k1, psso, yo, k4, slip 1 knitwise

The bold part is what I’m referring to. I think that when I yo from the purl to knit the next stitch I may be doing it wrong. When I look at the stitches after I’m done the row, that part has yarn wrapped around it so I know that’s where I’m messing up.

Any advice on yo after purling to knit the next stitch?

To make a yarn over between a purl and a knit, just take the yarn to the back of your work by placing it over the right needle. Then just proceed and knit the next stitch. Does that help?

So it’s like I’m yo backwards?

If that’s how it helps you to remember, then yes. All you’re doing is making an extra loop on the right needle that will be worked as a regular stitch on the next row.

How were you doing it before??

From what I remember i had the yarn in front and then I wrapped it around again. I’ll try it again later. Thanks! Hopefully I can get this right.
