Hi, it’s been quite a while since I posted on here. I got really into crocheting for a couple of years, and now I’m back to being really into knitting lol. Anyway, today I finally mastered the purl stitch after at least 9 years of knitting. I am very proud of myself. I just never really got purling before for some reason. Anyway, I’m wanting to make something for my girlfriend. She’s kinda tomboyish, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas? I was thinking along the lines of maybe a hat or a scarf or a sweater or somewhere in there. Thanks for the help!!
Scarves and hats are always good. Maybe fingerless mitts, too. A sweater is fine, but requires fitting so unless you have lots of time and access to her measurements and know exactly what she likes I’d go with the first ideas I gave. Welcome back to knitting!
Thanks, I’ve really missed it. I’ve been having that “craving” to knit recently.
I’m not exactly sure what her style would be, as far as knitted things go. Right now she’s visiting with her Dad and Ill and I want to surprise her with something. I think you’re right, I’ll probably go with a scarf or a hat. Now to decide which one, and what pattern lol. They all look great to me!!
I’m currently fascinated with the Irish Hiking Scarf(free pattern here). It might just suit you. I’m making it for a male friend of mine who loves geocaching, as my first cabling project (apparently it’s quite easy, for cables). Plus, since it’s so simple and so distinctive, there are patterns out there (sorry for no links) for hats and mittens to match. Seems like this might challenge you just a hair and fit the bill for your friend at the same time!
You know, I was just thinking this morning that I was going to try a scarf with cables in it. I think that this would be the perfect project. It’ll challenge me, and it’ll give her a perfect gift that’ll keep her nice and warm! Thanks so much!!
The Irish Hiking Scarf is not reversible if that matters to you. I prefer the look of reversible myself so here’s a few that are.
This one is for bulky yarn -
I made this one recently:

It’s reversable and looks almost exactly like the Irish Hiking Scarf. It’s a nice pattern to do because it has so many repeats! I hope you’re able to find something that works for you!
I forgot about that one! That’s a good one if you want to do more cables.
I’m wondering…is there a way that I could make the cables on both sides on the irish hiking scarf? Like maybe add a row or something? I already started on the scarf that HSR had posted. I didn’t even know that cables could be on both sides until you said something! I haven’t gotten to the cables yet, I’m just working on the knitting and purling that you do before you get to the cables. I’m like fixin to start on row 7. Thanks for the help ya guys!!!
Reversible cables are usually accomplished by using ribbing or seed stitch so it looks the same on both sides.
If you start ribbing now make sure that you have the correct number of stitches so it’ll come out right and then do whatever you did on this end on the other end so it looks intentional. Frankly though if I’d only done 7 rows I’d start over.
Yeah, I’m gonna have to start over anyway. I just got to the part where I start the cables, and my dog decided it would be a great idea to pee on my project. grrrrrrrr.
Hi!
I’ve been looking at those reversible cable scarf patterns and think they are awesome! About two years ago I made a cable scarf. Yes, it was beautiful on the RS, but I didn’t like it having a definite WS. This ribbing within the cable stitch makes perfect sense plus of course, the garter stitch is reversible. I recently frogged a scarf I had started with Fishermen’s Wool. Had about two feet knit, but the pattern just wasn’t doing anything for me. Now I am planning to use that Palindrome Reversible Cable Scarf pattern for this brown heather yarn. Crazykntter, is this the pattern you’re planning to use instead of the Irish Hiking? Oh! I have to ask… How much trouble did your darling dog get into?:tap: Jeanie in TX

Now I really am excited! Just discovered she’s got a hat pattern to match the Palindrome scarf!:woot:
yeah, that’s the scarf I’m going to be doing. I didn’t know that there was a hat pattern too!!! I might just have to make a hat to match it now! My dog got into ALOT of trouble for that one. She got spanked and put into her crate. She’s not completely potty trained yet, and I think she just drank more than her little bladder could take. She ended up peeing on the counch, on my knitting, AND on my foot. But it’s ok, I’ve started over now, and I like the way this pattern in turning out better anyway.
Oh no…don’t spank her! Spanking/hitting can have long lasting negative effects on her and I’m sure you don’t want her frightened of you. Just take her out regularly and praise her every time she goes. Watch her and if she looks like she is heading to the door or needs to go take her out.
Yeah, we’ve been doing the whole praising thing whenever she goes. I only spank her once whenever she does go. But I think you’re right, maybe that is having a negative affect on her, and that’s why she continues to go inside. We got her from a pet store, and she spent the first few months of her life in a crate. That’s the reason that we got her from there. Well that and we just fell in-love with her.
Some dogs just take longer to train, too. Best thing you can do right now is just take her out regularly and watch her. Use simple words like potty and out to help her out. My dog is pretty good now at 9 yrs, but on occasion I don’t hear her and she has an accident. I blame myself then.
What kind of dog is yours? Here’s my little sweetie.
Good Grief! Now I found patterns for Irish Hiking fingerless gloves and hand warmers on Raverly! Haven’t seen a mitten pattern yet, but I’m sure it’s out there somewhere. I’ve been thinking how pretty this reversible cable would be in an afghan. Some really soft yarn…doesn’t that sound cozy?
Jan,
Your dog is adorable!! I have a red boston terrier. Her name’s Aurora. Let me see if I can find a pic…
Here’s one. Not the world’s best pic. It’s hard to get a pic her actually being still!!! We also have two other dogs, Ben and Gia. Then we have two cats, Valentino and Aria.
The fingerless gloves sound like a pretty good idea. I wonder if they could somehow be made into mittens…the afghan also sounds like a great idea. Maybe knit with some simply soft or I love this yarn…mmmmmm.
