Ahhh, finally - picking up the needles again. A too-busy fall, followed by Christmas - now all’s quiet, everything done
I finished my first scarf this morning. Yup, I’ve never made one before. I kept it in a bag in my car, for the 2 days a week I pick up my gdaughters after school. I go extra early, rationalizing that I need to be sure of getting a good parking spot - then I get to relax in the car, knitting, for about half an hour before school’s out. Obviously I needed something easy to handle and simple cause it’s a little cramped with the steering wheel etc, so I decided on a scarf. I just made up a plain design. REALLY PLAIN and omg, that’s the most boring thing I’ve ever done in my entire life LOL. I thought it’d never be finished.
Anyway I need another project to start on when school goes back in, in 2 weeks’ time. I’m thinking another scarf but I need to make it fun. I was thinking maybe a bulky yarn, and maybe put one cable up the middle …
I don’t want it too long or very wide - I know most of the stylish scarves now are BIG and beautiful, but I’m not big, and with my very short hair if I put a huge scarf on I look like I’ve been swallowed by something fuzzy.
Does anyone have a better idea - maybe a scarf you’ve done that’d be interesting to do but not too intricate?
A friend of mine made a really pretty yet extremely simple cotton scarf. All you do is cast on 10-20 stitches on size 15 needles and knit for as long as you want (I think her’s was roughly 5’ long). Sorry I don’t have a picture, but it’s really nice and doesn’t take long to make at all.
I made a short button hole scarf last year. You can do it in all knit, stockinette, or do something fancy. It’s only about 2’ long. I like it for going outside in the winter with the dogs. With all my other scarfs the dogs jump on me and get their nails hung in the stitches, this one tucks nicely in my jacket/sweater. I believe I used Loops and Threads Homespun (it’s bulky yarn). Here’s the pattern I made and pictures (one is the steps on making the button hole);
Buttonhole Scarf
Cast on 24 stitches (a long tail cast on is best)
STEP 1: Knit every row for roughly 5-6"
STEP 2: Knit 12, bring yarn in front, and turn work
STEP 3: Knit first 12 stitches for 5 rows, cut a tail
STEP 4: Knit other 12 stitches for 5 rows
STEP 5: Knit the two sides together forming the buttonhole
STEP 6: Continue knitting for roughly 18-19"
STEP 7: Cast off, weave in you ends, and your done!

Thank you so much for posting this pattern - complete with photos - that was really nice of you. I like your scarf and I know that yarn - was admiring it in Michaels just recently!
Your picture shows 5 shelties - lovely! Growing up, I had a sheltie - he was the most wonderful, beautiful dog anyone could have. And smart! I adored him, and we were constant companions. He let me pose him so I could take pictures - I still have the one of him posed as a “knitting granny” (that’s what I labelled it…) - wrapped in a scarf, glasses on and needles. LOL, was that a prediction or what!!! Good grief that’s ME now :roflhard:
Thanks for taking the time to post the pattern & pics!

What a great idea. I’d have to experiment with that - I’ve only done a cable once - it was tiny, about 5 inches long in total, up the front of a doll’s dress, so my first thought is, would the cross-over opening be wide enough to pull the end of the scarf through?…
Oh I love ‘meeting’ fellow sheltie lovers! That picture sound absolutely adorable! I’d love to see it. I’ve had 7 sheltie, all so wonderful and have touched my life in so many different ways I could never even begin to explain. I don’t think I could ever not have a sheltie. You could say I’m just a bit obsessed.:teehee:
If your worried about the scarf fitting through the opening with the cable (which I don’t think would be a problem) you could always make it bigger by increasing the amount of rows on either side of the opening.
I’ll be digging in to my old photos soon, cause I have a project I need to work on with them - I’ll pull out my sheltie pics and send them to you then. “Ruffi” was such an important part of my life when I was a young girl - I’d love to hear about your life with shelties too
This kind of scarf could work very nicely with the cables. You wouldn’t cross the cables very often. Leave long columns of sts between the cable crosses. You could let the length of the opening that’s needed determine how often you do the cable cross row.
If you elongate the cables similar to this, crossing row, 10 ish or more rows stockinette depending on your gauge, crossing row, the scarf should fit through there nicely.
Sorry so long replying, IslandTime, been a bit preoccupied offline. HTH!
