I would like to knit and purl a blanket for my baby. My plan is two knit two then purl two. My questions are:
What size needle do I use?
How many stitches do I cast on?
Do I have to use the circular needles or can I use the regular needles?

There is no definite answer to those questions. You needle size depends a lot on the yarn you want to use. For example, if you have a bulky yarn you use larger needles than for a worsted weight yarn, and for sport yarn you use a smaller needle than for worsted weight.
Once you know the yarn you want to use, and I think that’s the most important thing, then we can help you figure out needle size, gauge, and how many stitches you need to cast on for the size you want.
Straights or circular also depends on how many stitches you end up casting on.
Thankyou the other question I have is will straight needles work for a larger blanket also, I just find it easier to knit on straight needles. Does the work yo have allready done get in the way/

Nothing really gets in the way when you knit on straights. The main problem is if the number of stitches you want to use will physically fit on your needles. One way to avoid having too many stitches on straights for a blanket is to either knit in squares and put them together, or knit in panels and put them together.
I have a pattern that uses four strands of yarn at a time and is done on size 35 needles (big fat ones). That takes only 35 stitches across (each st having four strands) and that fit on the needle.
But if you wanted to fit 200 stitches on a needle, you might have a problem.

:?? You have a pattern that uses four strands etc etc … yet you ask, “Can I have this pattern?” Hrmmm…ok, I’m confused :?? Um-what pattern is it?
I think that was a Quote Gone Wrong. I said I had a pattern. It’s not from anywhere–someone told me how to do it years ago and I did one recently. Let me write it down to make sure I don’t make any mistakes, and I’ll post it later on.
This pattern is very flexible as to what size you want it to be.To make it wider, add ten more stitches to add two more blocks.
The last one I made was a good baby blanket size, but I’m not sure of the measurements exactly:
Size 35 needles, or larger, depending on what’s available.
Using four strands of worsted weight yarn at one time, cast on 35 st.
Work in garter st (k every row) for 5 rows.
Pattern stitch
Row 1: k5, p5, k5, p5, k5, p5, k5
Row 2: k5, k5, p5, k5, p5, k5, p5
Rows 3, 4, 5, 6: k5, knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you, ending with k5
Row 7: k10, p5, k5, p5, k10
Row 8- k5, p5, k5, p5, k5, p5, k5
Rows 9, 10, 11, 12: k5, knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you, ending with k5
Work these two sets of rows until you are a few inches short of the length you want.
K 5 rows and bind off.
