I need help with understanding actual measurement

OK so here is the measurements for the pattern. I am doing size 112/117.

The pattern works sideways and I am currently doing the back.

I am in the middle of it all and then realised, this is pretty long! So then I checked.

Now I am confused, my back of the cardigan, length (bottom to top) measures 92cm. I am at the stage where I will not need to increase anymore.

The pattern has a full actual measurement and full measurement. Which do I follow? What is the difference?

Now with the full measurement, I am off by a lot so I have to start it all again.

The pattern requires chunky wool, to save money, I brought huge aran wool balls and put two aran yarns together to get a chunky wool. My knitting group said it would work but I wasn’t sure.

Do I need to start again?

The pattern give the bust size of the person that it is designed for (112-117cm) and then the actual measurement of the sweater across the bust (126cm). The next number is the length (64cm, neck to waist or hip) and then the sleeve measurements. You shoulf follow both the actual measurement of sweater width (126cm) and the length (64cm). Those numbers should match to the schematic.
It sounds like your gauge may be off. You seem to be getting fewer sts/cm than the gauge given in the pattern (20sts/10cm). If you didn’t do a gauge swatch with the doubled yarn, you can measure now on the knitting you’ve done so far. If the gauge is off you may be able to work with smaller size needles to get the pattern gauge. Twenty sts/10cm works for a single strand of worsted weight or maybe aran weight but aran doubled will be too thick to get gauge.
If the sweater is longer than you wish, you may have to start the increased portion again with appropriate size needles. I don’t see an way around it.
What pattern are you following? Can you give us a link or a pattern name?

Thank you!

I actually do not know how to count rows :frowning:

I begin and then get confused.

I might start it all over again and do the tension square. I never have done it before but I am usually always good with tension.

Thanks for your help! Really appreciate it

The problem may not be your tension but the fact that you have the yarn doubled.
If it’s stockinette, you can count the Vs on the knit side in order to count rows. Since this sweater in knit sideways, you can also forget about counting rows and just measure in cms.
Good luck with it. I like sweaters that are knit sideways.

I think I am going to have to start again :frowning:

Why can knitting be so heart breaking?!!

My knitting comes up longer, 6 cms longer than the 10cm advised. I think I might need a larger needle?

You need to have 20 stitches per 4 inches (10cm) If you are getting 16 cm with 20 stitches, you’d have to go down in needle size to make your stitches smaller.

However, you might not like the fabric with the doubled yarn on needles small enough to get gauge since it might be too stiff. Knit several inches to be sure.

It might work to make a smaller size with the larger stitches, but it would require a lot of math to make sure that your gauge would measure up properly in the end.
