Thanks Carey!
I cheat with my icing and use the Jiffy icing mix in a box. It gets just the right amount of hard. Not like some of those you get at the bakery thatâll break your teeth.
We had a holiday party a few weeks ago for the exchange students that I work with and part of the party was cookie decorating. Before the party, our boss gave cookie dough to the students and had them bake the cookies. Unfortunately there must have been a break in communication because they sprinkled a whole lot of flour over the finished cookies. The taste was a littleâŚoff, but not too bad after they were dusted off and covered with copious amounts of frosting haha
I ended up making the meringue icing recipe. I probably wonât make it again. I hardened nicely, but the flavor isnât that great. Doesnât seem to affect the cookies though. Iâll post some pix later.
As far as royal icing goes, to make it taste better, use lemon or orange juice in place of water (or part of the water). It really gives it a yummy kick and doesnât mess with the consistency. You can use vanilla or an alcohol based flavoring, but the juices donât mess with the make-up of the icing as much.

I used clear vanilla so it wouldnât color the icing. After I said that I ate another cookie and you know even though the frosting didnât taste good alone itâs fine on the cookie so I guess itâs no big deal. I donât need to be eating ârawâ frosting anyway. :teehee: OJ is an interesting idea. It would probably affect the color though with this type of decorating.
