I dropped the newly cast on backwards loop stitches for the underarm? Any way to fix?

Hello!

This is my first knitting project - i am making a jumper and I accidentally dropped the stitches i had just cast on for the underarm on my second round of the body - is there any way to fix without going all the way back? Im afraid of losing stitches that I just divided for in the arm - thanks so much!!

There is just this long line of yarn from the dropped stitches!

Thanks!!!

How many sts do you need to cast on?
You can pick up the strand connecting the two sides and backwards loop cast on as many sts as you can. When the strand gets too short, pick up the strand and pinch it, rotate clockwise and place the loop on the needle. Do this as many times as needed. You can always add in an extra stitch or two on the next round.
It’s similar to the method used here for long tail. You only have a single strand so all you need to pay attention to is the twist of the loop.

Hello! Thank you for the quick response!

So should I use the long strand to do a backwards loop cast for the 8 stitches i lost? Does it matter that it wont be on the correct round? The other sleeve has the 8 new stitches on the previous round

When i do the backwards loop cast on its supposed to be on the right needle? If i do this theres a gap between the newly cast on stitches and the working yarn so should i just ignore than and keep knitting around?

Thanks so much!!

You could turn the work and cast the sts onto the left hand needle then turn back and knit them on this round. Cast on a bit more loosely or knit the sts more loosely so that the extra yarn gets taken up. If the extra yarn is distributed along the cast on and the next row, it’ll be fine.

In future there are better cast ons for this number of sts. The backwards loop will get loops on the needle but it’s not very sturdy. It’s ok for 3-4sts but for larger number, a knit or cable cast on works better.

Your first knitting project looks very nice. We’d love to see a photo when you finish!

Thank you so much! It worked perfectly so I can continue my jumper!

The pattern (Hanstholm sweater by petite knit) called for the backwards loop cast on for the under arm but i will look into the other methods for my next project

Yes! Ill definitely send the finish product here -im so thankful i was so scared that I had messed everything up - coming from crocheting knitting is definitely more scary and less forgiving LOL

Thanks again!!

Great to hear you fixed your jumper!
As you get to know more knitting you’ll probably find yourself wanting to modify bits in patterns, such as switching the backwards loop to a knit cast on, so much better, and you won’t mind that the pattern didn’t include it.

Another really helpful skill is tinking. Tink is the word knit backwards and the technique is safely un-knitting a single stitch at a time so you don’t lose any work but can backtrack a few stitches or even a full row or two if needed. I use this so much.
