I-cord bind off in the middle of a row

Hello,

I’m coming to the end of a lovely, chunky cardigan. I have knitted it in one piece on cable needles starting from the top so that I’m now at the bottom of the cardigan. The pattern reads:

Cast off the first front piece (normal cast off ). Cast off the back piece using an i-cord cast off:
Make 3 new s by making backward loops on the left needle.
K2, SSK. Place the 3 s on the right side back onto the left needles
Repeat from * to * until 3 s remain on the back piece. K3tog.
Cast off the other front piece.

I know how to cast off normally. I also understand the principle of an i-cord cast off and how to do it at the beginning of a row. However, what I don’t understand is, once I have cast off normally I have one stitch left on my right needle when I get to where I should do the i-cord cast off. Do I slip that one stitch back to my left needle without working it and before making three new stitches for the i-cord cast off? Or should I leave it on the right needle?

Many thanks in advance for your reply.

Kira

I think you are to slip the one remaining stitch onto the L needle. Then make three more sts using the backwards loop CO (turn/twist needle and do this from the ws), then turn needle back and work these 4sts as directed (K2, SSK) from the L needle to the R, leaving you with 3sts.
