I am a newbie, nedding help

When I knit both sides are knit. not one side knit, one side purled, what am I doing wrong?

:knitting:

When I think of the “knit” side, I think of the smooth side with the little vees. And the purl side is bumpy. There is no stitch I know of that will produce the smooth “knit” side on both sides. However if you knit every row you will get the same thing on both sides. It will make ridges of purl bumps separated by valleys of knit between them. To get purl bumps on one side and knit vees on the other you need to purl every time the bumpy side faces you as you work and knit when the smooth side faces you. You will be knit and purling alternate rows all the time.

Look at the videos under Basic Stitches here http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips to see how to end up with the stitch you want.

there is only 1 stitch

think of a coin–a dime say–if you place a dozen dimes on a glass table all heads side up… (all knits stitches on one side)

And then turn your self upside down, (slide under the table) you’d be looking at the tails of the dimes!

in knitting you don’t turn your self round, but you do “turn the work” (and all those knit stiches? the back side of them are purls!

knit a row (knit on front/purls on back)
turn the work
Purl on front, (previous row) and a new row of Knits…

knit every row, and you get, (when working with 2 needles, flat) equally distributed rows of knits and purls (aka Garter stitch!)

It’s not the stitch that is different, its how its oriented!

to make a piece of work that has all knits on one side (smooth V’s) and all purls on the other, (richly textured bumps), you need to alternate,
1 row of Knits,
1 row of purls. (and you turn the work, you need to 'turn" how you work the stitch.)

there is ONLY the STITCH… on one side it a knit stitch, on the other side its a purl stitch (there is one a dime–one side is heads, one side is tails!)

Right. If you’re knitting every row, it should look the same on both sides.

I was very confused on the same subject when I started. The knit stitch and purl stitch are direct opposits. When you knit a row you will get the V’s and on the other side you will see the “bumps” which you get from purl stitches.
