How would I do vertical stripes on a scarf?

I just started and have only made one scarf and my dad wants me to make him a scarf with the four colors black red orange yellow and wants vertical stripes. He wants it like this

        |b|r|o| y |o|r|b|

if that makes any sense someone suggested circular needles and making it like a blanket except shorter if you understand

Well, the easiest thing would be to knit it the long way. It would mean casting on a ton of stitches but that way you could knit the first color then switch to the next color and so on. That would be easier than trying to carry so many colors on each row the regular way.

If you do decide to work lengthwise be sure to use a needle for the cast on that is a couple of sizes larger than the one you are going to knit the rest of the scarf with. Otherwise the edge may constrict too much and you might wind up with a horseshoe shaped scarf. You need the cast on edge to be really loose and flexible.

Yep, it would make the most sense to knit it lengthwise rather than widthwise. To do this, you’ll have to have an accurate measure of your gauge (stitches/inch) and know how long you want the scarf to be. Then you will cast on, it will be a large number of stitches so you will need a long circular needle to accomodate them all, and then start with the first colour, knit whatever number of rows, switch colours, etc.

For example, if you wanted the scarf to be 60" long and you are getting 5sts/1", you will have to cast on 300sts.

thanks!!

what kind of needle are best for knitting vertical stripes on a scarf. long straight needles, or circs?

if circs, how long?

Straights would probably not be a good idea. It’s just too much for your wrists to support. A long circular is the best bet - I’m not sure how long exactly, depends how long you want your scarf to be but you’d be surprised how many stitches can be squished onto a circular needle. I would say a 29" or 36" circ should be enough.

i good, i do have one 29" circular needle. i tried straights before, but it didnt fit and it was really squished anyway so this tip was really helpful
