in my pattern notes it says to yo purlwise-wrap yarn counter clockwise from front to back instead of back to front.
I am on a knit row and this is the pattern repeat instructions:
K4,yo, sl2-k1-p2sso,yo purlwise, k5
I don’t understand how this is different from the other yo in the pattern repeat
Please clarify
Correction to pattern notes:
Yo purlwise Wrap yarn counter clockwise from back to front instead of from front to back
I am wondering if this is an error in the instructions
@engblom or other combined style knitters, might this indicate a pattern written for combined knitting?
Just a wild guess of mine.
Thank you for your quick reply. Because I am on a knit row my yarn is already in the back when I am at the yo purlwise so I have to wrap it back to front and counter clockwise is how you do a yo in a knit row so how is it different when doing a yo purlwise? I am so confused.
I do not think the pattern is written especially for combined knitters. What I mean, we combined knitters do not care much about how the stitches are mounted, we have them anyway mounted both ways in a project.
There might be some other reasons for wrapping the YO this way:
- Right leaning YO increase. If you mount it like this you need less steps for twisting counter clockwise on next row.
- Some decreases need you to alter the direction of the mount. Now it is already altered.
Without reading the whole pattern it is impossible to know why it is wrapped in this way.
Welcome to KH!
That sounds like the beginning of the usual yarn over between knit sts. You would yarn over from front to back after a purl st and before a knit st.
What is the name of your pattern?
You are completely right! I should have visualized it in my head better. For some reason I was automatically thinking about clockwise yarn over when @OffJumpsJack suggested combined knitting. Clockwise yarn over would create the other kind of mount we normally see in combined knitting.
What I wrote in the previous post is true for clockwise yarn over.
Weekend Shawl by Anne kuo lukito
The body is done in one pattern of stitches and then you do the border in two different lace patterns
The first is done in two rows
Row 1 WS Purl
Row 2 RS: Sl1,k1,(k1,yo,k2,sl2-k1-p2sso,k2,yo,k4) 23(25,27)/25(27,28)times, k1,yo,k2,sl2-k1-p2sso,k2,yo,k3
The second lace pattern is as follows:
Row1: (ws) Purl across
Row2: (rs) sl1,(k4,yo,sl2-k1-p2sso,yo purlwise, k5) so many times.
R0w3: (ws) sl1,p3,yo,p1,sl2-p1-p2sso,p1,yo,p3,(p4,yo,p1,sl2-p1-p2sso,p1,yo,p3) so many times p1
Row4: sl1,(k2,yo,k2,sl2-k1-p2sso,k2,yo,k3) so many times
Row5: sl1,p1,yo,p3,sl2-p1-p2sso,p3,yo,p1,(p2,yo,p3.sl2-p1-p2sso,p3,yo,p1) so many times p1
Row6: sl1,(yo,k4,sl2-k1-p2sso,k4,yo,k1) so many times
Notes
Sl2-k1-p2sso -(centered double decrease) sl2 sus together knit wise, k1, then pass the slipped sets together over the knitted st. 2 sets decreased
Sl2-p1-p2sso-(centered double decrease in purl) slip 2 sets together purlwise through the back loop (as if working a p2tog til), p1,then pass the slipped sts
Gorgeous! A few knitters commented on the yo purlwise but it seems most just went on with the usual yo.

I do not believe this pattern is available to buy any longer.
Thank you for all the help. I will just do the normal yo as well. I am so anal I couldn’t get past this. I would knit and rip so many times that I really needed some help with it.
Again thanks and happy knitting to all of you!
Is it possible that the “purlwise yo” is referring to the double-wrap we do when working a purl row? I tried it both ways - just a simple yo and then a double wrap. With the double wrap you get an extra stitch, so it comes down to how many stitches are supposed to be on the needle for that row. The pattern is slipping 2, so maybe the double wrap is to even up the stitch count.
Just a thought…I knit lace but I haven’t been knitting lately so there’s a good chance I’m way off base.
