How to work increased stitches into a Pattern

Hi everyone

My pattern is worked over 6 rows

1st Row: Knit
2nd Row: K1, *k1, p4, rep from * to last st. k1
3rd Row: k1, *k3, p2, rep from * to last st, k1
4th row: as 3rd row
5th row: as 2nd row
6th row: knit

I am knitting the sleeves and it calls for an increase at each end of needle on 1st row and then every following 6th row.

How do I incorporate the increased stitches into the pattern?

Also what is the best increase to use for sleeves

In this case, your increase is very simple becasue you are being asked to increase on row 1 each time, which is simply a knit row, therefore when you increase work the row like so…
row1: K1, M1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1

I would suggest using paired M1L and M1R, so as to have the slants leaning opposite directions as the sleeve widens, but you could just do all M1L or all M1R or all kfb. It is up to you.
Remember, as you will be seeming up the seam, the seam and the increases will be hidden on the under side of the arm.

When I do the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th rows will I just start the rows as in the pattern i.e. would the 2nd row still start k1, k1, p4

No because you’ve got the extra sts in there after the inc rows, so you have to put in the extra sts that would come in the sequence of repeated ones, or the ones before it.

So row 2 becomes - k1 p1 * k1, p4, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2
Row 3 woud be - k1, p1 *k3, p2, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2
then rows 4, 5 and 6 would be as above.

Then row 7 is the same as row 1 with the incs, so the following rows would be -

k1 p2 * k1, p4, rep from * to last 3 sts, k1, p1, k1
and - k1, p21 *k3, p2, rep from * to last 3 sts, k3

See how you’re inserting the new sts in there; the end sts will remain the same, but the new sts will start in the end of what would be a previous sequence.
