How to tell difference from loom and handknit sweater

Have a look at http://www.aransweatermarket.com/ladies-knitwear/cardigans-and-jackets/ladies-handknit-lumber-jacket

Does this look handknit or loomed knit to you? or a combination of both.

I actually do like to buy handknit to get some ideas. When shopping online and just by looking at the pics available can you give tips of what to try and look for.

These all look handknit to me - http://www.aransweatermarket.com/clan-aran-sweaters
not sure about the first one above.

Not sure what you mean by “loomed knit”. What is that, exactly??

Hi Knit Cindy,

I am new to knitting maybe I didn’t use right word.

I was having a chat this lady about the garment above and she insisted it was loomed and not hand knit. I think she said it was done on a machine and I didn’t think so.

I could see it was made in 4 parts. with the seams all handknit. Those designs are so complex but this lady insisted she was an expert and I wanted to get an opinion here.

Hope you can understand what I mean

I think most sweaters we see in stores are machine knit. If there are more than one or two, they come in multiple colors, and the cost is reasonable they likely aren’t handknits.

I found the following site which may answer your question:

I remember reading that the confusion may be due to the difference between the knitting industry’s definantions of diffent types of knitting and a normal person’s.

The industry definations were, basically:

If done on a computerised/electronic knitting machine with no/minimal human intervention/supervison: ‘Machine Knit’.

It done on an electric machine or hand operated knitting loom/frame with constant human intervention/supervision: ‘Hand Knit’.

If done on knitting needles: ‘Hand Knit on Needles’ or ‘Knit on Needles’ (can’t remember the exact phrase).

I can’t remember if this refered to the EU or not.

So if the garment was made on a hand operated loom it could be that the seller and the lady you spoke to are both correct.
