I have purchased a new sweater (with tags still attached) from a thrift store. It’s very pretty and cost only $3.00.It is made with multiple rows of designs with the yarns knotted at the side of each row. However, the sleeves are about two inches longer than the tips of my fingers. I knew this when I bought it, but I was thinking that there is a way to shorten these. They are not worked in the round. They are made from the cuff up (I believe) and the the sleeve is shaped. Can anyone point me to a great link that explains and shows the procedure for shortening these, or is it not possible with this type of knitted project? I need to shorten them about four inches. BTW, it is made from cotton and ramie. Is ramie a wood product? Thanks.
Not sure, but I think ramie is a plant product. Maybe. Is it a machine made sweater? If so the yarn is very fine and you’d need tiny needles to reknit the cuffs to make them match. You could just cut them off about an inch longer than you want them and sew the ends under like a hem, but you have to be careful to catch all the stitches so they don’t run.

Suzeeq, I had thought to do the hem method if I can find a good tutorial. As to the link in the third post, that method would work great except that my sweater in done in a multiple of designed rows. I don’t think that would work well and allow me to maintain the design throughout. Thanks thought for the suggestions. Presenly I am wearing the sweater with the excess turned under.
How about this? What if you unraveled the cuff from the edge up (you might have to snip a bit to get it started, but it sounds like you have plenty to work with), and then use some of the yarn you frogged to knit a new cuff going back down?
I dropped by the library today and they have a great book, The Big Book Of Knittibg. It shows and explains how to shorten or lengthen. So this should be a big help. Thanks all.
After reading and studying on the process of shortening my sleeves, I finally took the plunge this morning. I have one sleeve shortened and hemmed nicely. :happydance:
