How to seperate front and back on circular needles

I’m knitting my first adult project, the Fixation Tank that I found on Ravelry.com.

The pattern is knit from the bottom-up. After you knit for 14 inches, the pattern says: “Seperate for front and back: Working back and forth in pattern on the first [85] sts only for back, bind off [4] sts at the beg of the next 2 rows.”

This is how I did it:

First, I put all the stitches for the front section on stitch holders. Then, I bound off the first four stitches of the back section. I knit across the remaining stitches and then I bound off the last four stitches at the end of the row. I ended-up on the wrong side of the work with a stitch on my needle followed by a gap where I had bound off the last four stitches.

This looked really wrong; I’m sure that gap wasn’t supposed to be there. I also didn’t how to get back to beginning of the row. There were fewer stitches on my circular needle now, so was I supposed to continue working in the round using Magic Loop method (yuk, I hope not) or was I supposed to switch to straight needles? Also, after binding off the last four stitches on the back, I found myself looking at the wrong side of my work. Was I supposed to purl my way back to the beginning?

I have ripped out these stitches and am now at the point before the pattern says to “separate for front and back.” Somebody please help me. Explain how to separate for front and back when I’m working on circular needles and how to bind off the last four stitches without creating a gap.

Thank you, I’m eternally grateful.

You have your front stitches on a holder, correct? You’ll be working flat (back and forth) on the back section only for now. You can do this on the circs or switch to straight needles if you prefer. BO the first 4 sts and work to the end of the row. Turn and BO the first 4 stitches on this, a WS, row. Binding off at the end of the row doesn’t work as you found out. If you’re working in stockinette you will now purl on the WS.
