How to,read this pattern?

Hi.
This has me confused in a big way.
Am really hoping someone can tell me want it all means. PLEASE and thank you.

RE: Shetland Shawl
Found it on knitting-and.com
It is an old,pattern.
Does the cast on include selvage?
What is the 2 extra?
Then am really confused as how to,read row 5 and 7.
Do I repeat the last 4 stitches of the repeat pattern only, or when I reach the end of the row, I repeat the last 4 stiches of the pattern?
Similarly, how do I approach row 7?
HERE are the iNSTRUCTIONS.

Cast on a number divisible by 6 and 2 extra.

1st Row: Sl 1, k1, *yo, k1, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k1, yo, k1, Rep from * to end of row

2nd and Alternate Rows: Sl 1, Purl to end

3rd Row: Sl 1, k1, * K1, yo, Sl 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k2, Rep from * to end of row

5th Row: Sl 1, k2tog, k1, * yo, k1, yo, k1, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k1, Rep from * to last 4 sts yo, K1, yo, K1, K2tog.

7th Row: Sl 1, k2tog, *yo, k3, yo, Sl 1, k2tog, psso, Rep from * to last 5 sts, yo, k3, yo, k2tog

Purl 8th row, then repeat these eight rows for length required, usually a square. Edge with a knitted lace.

I want to make a delicate baby blanket and so appreciate your help.
THANK YOU So much!

Hello, and welcome to KnittingHelp.

I’m not sure if the pattern includes a designated selvage, but I don’t think it’s necessary to add one.

The 2 extra refers to 2 extra stitiches, so your cast on will be

(1 x 6) + 2 = 8
(2 x 6) + 2 = 14
(3 x 6) + 2 = 20
(4 x 6) + 2 = 26
and so on.

On both rows 5 and 7 you keep repeating all the intructions between the untill you get to the last 4 or 5 stitches and then carry out the final instructions for that row. Remember yo’s don’t use a stitch, even though they increase the stitch count.

Thanks so much Julie…was second guessing everything, and over thinking…grrrrrr…reviewing the videos, and the yarn overs to make sure will be doing this right. The videos are the best out there.
This site is so helpful! Thanks machos and muchos!
