How to purl on WS, turn and work back, and then be on the RS?

Hello all,

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me clarify my pattern instructions. I’ve been knitting in the round for a sleeveless sweater and I’m now starting the divide for the neck on straight needles.
It says on WS purl, then turn and work 66 back sts only. Then on RS knit. But if I turn to knit back the 66 sts I end up on a WS again? Sorry, I can’t figure this one out. Thank you in advance for any tips!

Here are the instructions

Divide for front and back: Beg working
with straight needles, leaving front sts on
cir needle.
Row 1: (WS) Sl 1, p1, ssp (see box), purl to
4 sts before side m, p2tog, p2—2 sts dec’d.
Turn and work 66 (74, 82, 92, 100, 108)
back sts only.
Row 2: (RS) Sl 1, k1, k2tog, knit to 4 sts
before end-of-rnd m, ssk, k2—2 sts dec’d.
Rep last 2 rows 3 (4, 5, 6, 7, 8) more
times—52 (56, 60, 66, 70, 74) sts rem.

This is after I purled the first WS row, turned and knit back. But now I’m on the WS again and the second row is supposed to be on a RS.

Thank you,

Kim Mai

Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
You have the front sts on hold so you’re working on the back sts. The directions are to turn after working a WS row and work on only 66 of the back (as opposed to the front) sts.
“Turn and work 66 back sts only.”
Once you turn, you’ll be working Row 2, a RS row.
The instructions are not worded in the clearest way so I can see why you would be confused.

Oh! Thank you so much! That makes it so much clearer! I am so grateful for your help!

The pattern is Lutea Lace-shoulder Shell by Angela Hahn. I got it from the Interweave site.

Thank you again! You really saved me!
