How to make this edge?

My first visit to this forum, I would be very happy if you can help us out.
My daughter, a new knitter, is keen to knit a scarf. Relatively large, loosely knitted so it will drape. She has the yarn, and the needles, and is ready to go!
I have just a little knitting experience ( my grandma was the pro, but sadly not here to ask anymore), but I know with a simple stockinette stitch, the edges will roll if we don’t do something.
My daughter saw this edging in the store, and would like to use it. See attached photo.
I can see it’s about 4 or 5 stitches wide, and the rows seem to be k p k k . But I can’t figure out how you make the knitting edge look like it is “behind” the main part of the scarf? Is it the knitting or the needle size?
Hope this makes sense, any ideas how to replicate it greatly appreciated.

The edge itself looks like you do a few rows of stocking stitch, then a couple of knit or purl rows on the same side to get the ridges. I’m wondering if they’ve also slipped the first stitch before doing the main body of the scarf? The stitches in the border look the same size to me.

It looks like a garter stitch border. Just knit the first and last few stitches of every row. BTW, that might not stop the curling but you can try it for a few inches to see how it looks

Welcome to KH!
The way that the border seems to fall behind the main body of the scarf is probably due to the natural curl of stockinette. It’s always going to try to flip the border.

always wondered that. thanks for your helpful posts. will try to do it alongside with some Chewy Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookies

Yes, it’s a garter stitch border and you have to skip the first stitch as if to knit, and knit the last one.

Thank you all so much for your help. We made a test patch and have plan !,
Looks like it will also curl at the bottom, so will do a few rows of knit at the bottom.
Appreciate the knowledge in this forum!,

I think they might have swapped order of the stitches, in the same way as when working a cable, there where the edge looks like it is deeper in.

Just from looking at the picture my guess is as follows
Row 1: K across,
Row 2: P across,
Row 3: K across,
Row 4: K5, P across, K5.
Repeat rows 1 to 4 for as long as you want.
