How to make a knitted item less likely to unravel (safety issue)?

My friend had a nightmare experience when her cat swallowed a whole lot of thread and it got entangled in his intestines and had to go for major surgery. While I’m just a complete beginner, my goal is to eventually be able to donate my knitted items to charity. I know people will say " Cats are smart"/" My cat will never do that" but accidents happen ( as in my friend’s case) and I want to be sure that if the beneficiaries’ cats start playing with their knitted items, they won’t be likely to unravel and cause injuries.

I don’t know any way to keep knitting or crochet from unraveling once a cut or tear is make. Sharp claws are likely to get into these hand made items.
A charity for dogs rather than cats might be a slightly better bet. I know our local pet store used to collect knit blankets for the dogs in the county shelter.

One idea might be to felt the toys (have to be wool, synthetic fibres won’t work)? It’s not the best/easiest method but a felted woollen item won’t unravel even if cut. I’m just trying to think outside the box a bit though.

For cats and dogs I think fleece or baby blankets(not crochet and not knitted) would be safer.
