I am trying out a pattern for a Cats Eye Topper and it uses a double yarn over.
on the following row I knit and then purl each of the yarn overs - should I then have some yarn that falls off the needle? I seem to be ending up with extra stitches.
On the next row you knit into one loop, and purl into the 2nd loop of the double YO, not k p in each one. That should use up your yo and you won’t have extra sts.
Is this the right stitch pattern?

Row 1 (RS): K4, *2yo, k4; rep from * across.
Row 2: P2, *p2 tog, [p1, k1] in 2yo of previous row, p2 tog; rep from *, to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 3: K2, yo, *k4, 2yo; rep from *, to last 6 sts, k4, yo, k2.
Row 4: P3, *[p2 tog] twice, [p1, k1] in 2yo of previous row; rep from * to last 7 sts, [p2 tog] twice, p3.

Yes, and yes these are the patterns - I am sorry I was too tired last night to put in the link (I got it through email)
I am ok with the k and p into the 2 loops but then sometimes seem to have a half loop left - and I am not sure what to do with it - I am guessing I drop it to form the hole??
Depsite following the pattern very carefully, I still am ending up with extra stitches by the end of row 4.
Yes, just drop the extra loop. Are you making sure to p2tog enough times? Do you have the right number of sts after row 2? Do you make the yo as just wrapping the needle, not wrap and knit 1, then k4?

Am going to bring it me away with me on my trip tomorrow and check all those questions. Yes I think I am doing the p2 tog ok but not so sure about the knit1 after the yo
I am also using yo to make a picot edging on a shrug for my daughter. I have just done the sleeves and was MUCH better at it than at the bottom of the shrug’s back. I think it is a case of practise as usual but also paying very close attention to where the yarn sits on the right needle after each yarn over (oh get me i’m starting to sound like a proper knitter!)

Just [B]do not[/B] do a k1 after the yo. Knit 4, wrap, wrap (so there’s 2 more loops on the needle), k4, wrap, wrap, k4, etc. Then on the next row, p in the first YO loop, and k in the 2nd one.
Also, keep in mind that the second wrap/yo before you do the first of the K4 stitches does NOT go ALL the way around the needle twice. A lot of people try to wrap it around again to make a closed loop for the second YO. The 2nd YO isn’t “closed” – it’ll be open at the back of the needle, as you get ready to make the first of the K4 stitches. If that doesn’t make sense, let me know and I’ll take a picture of it for you.
Just a suggestion. . . since your pattern is done in multiples of four, would it help you to place a stitch marker every four sts? This often helps me when I have a pattern with a lot of YO’s.
