This is the first cardigan I’ve ever knitted. I’m at one of the last steps, knitting the front band. But I’m very confused! The directions say:
With rs facing, use 8mm circular needle and color A, beg and ending at front cast-on edges, pick up and knit 50 sts evenly up entire right fron opening edge, k across 23 st on back holder, then pick up and knit 50 st evenly down entire left front opening edge.
My question is, am I supposed to have a circular needle long enough that I can work on all of this continuously? The longest cable I have is 40’’ and I’m not convinced it can fit all 123 of these stitches for the front-band. Or alternatively, do I snake up the cable as I knit? But if I do that, how will those earlier stitches not come undone without stitch markers/holders of some sort?
Does anyone have a link to a good tutorial? All of the ones I found show them picking up stitches on small swatches, which is great for learning how to pick up the stitches - however I don’t really get a sense of how to do this “at scale”.
A 40" circular needle should be long enough to do this, unless you’re using a very thick yarn.
Are you using a fixed circular needle, or an interchangeable needle? If you’re using interchangeables, you could temporarily tape two cords together, to make the cord longer.
Can you connect another cable to extend the interchangeable? Another alternative is to use 2 circular needles, one to knit the first 60sts and the second for the remainder of the sts.
These suggestions may be easier than purchasing a longer cable circular.
