Hello to my fellow knitters! I am a very new knitter, but I learn quickly and could really use some help!
So I’m in the middle of making a baby blanket for my friend. I wanted to engrave her baby’s name into the blanket with the same yarn I’ve been using. The problem I’ve come to realize is that when you have purling going across it RISES above the knit work, and then when the purling is vertical, it sinks BELOW the knit work. Thus when you’re knitting in letters it doesn’t work out. Any other possible stitches or technique I could use? I would really prefer to avoid having to do a fair isle stitch as to not mess up the back of the blanket if at all possible, PLEASE HELP!
One possibility I can think of is doing the lettering in cables. If you
are familiar with cabling I don’t think it would be too hard to work
out what you need. Here is a link to a swatch of cabled letters that
might give you an idea. I’m a cable nut so that is my first thought,
probably others will have some different ideas for you to try!
I’m a big fan of embroidering things on afterwards using duplicate stitch (also called Swiss darning). If you do it well, you really can’t tell that it is not part of the knitting as it looks just like a different coloured stitch, but it has the advantage that you don’t have to muck around with constantly switching colours of wool and twisting it together at the back! It also has a big advantage over knitting a name in, in that it can easily be unpicked later on (for example, if another child is to inherit the blanket then their name can be put on instead - if you had knitted the name in it would unravel if you tried!)
Another vote for dupe st. No need to concern yourself with placement, either. When done afterwards you can decide where, exactly, you want certain embellishments and can add/subtract what you like/don’t like.
