How to crochet an edge on a scarf

Good evening! I just finished the main part of the Button Scarf(mine will have no buttons, though) I am making for my Mom. Now I am supposed to “work 1 round of single crochet around all edges of Scarf” with my contrasting color and have no idea what that means. I went to You Tube and found videos that explained it, but they were all starting form a chain stitch - not adding it to a scarf.
Can anyone enlighten me? This will only be my 4th FO, so I am very new to knitting and have never tried crochet!

Ok. That scarf is beautiful, btw, but I think I’d also prefer it without the buttons. hehe. So, I’ll try to explain this the best I can.

The first thing you need is a crochet hook about the same size as your needles. Make a slip knot around the hook, put the hook through one of your corner stitches, wrap the yarn around the hook, and pull it through both the stitch and the slip knot. Now, you want to go in that stitch again, wrap the yarn around the hook, pull it through, wrap it around again, and the pull the yarn through both stitches. This makes one single crochet. Then you go through the next edge stitch, wrap the yarn around, pull up a loop, wrap yarn around again, pull through both stitches. Repeat all the way around the scarf.

I hope this makes sense. If not, this http://www.nexstitch.com/v_single_crochet.html is a decent tutorial. You also can do a google search for crochet videos.

Hope this helps! :cheering:

Thanks! So at some point I will have a tail that needs to be woven back in? I think I may be able to do this, LOL!

Yes, you will have a tail to weave in.

I’m pretty good at crochet, pretty lousy at knitting (but working on that!). I haven’t added a crocheted edge to anything but plan to try soon.

Good luck, I’m sure it will look great!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I just started the crochet - after watching the video at nexstitch - and it is going perfectly! I am so excited (can you tell)!!! I’ll post a picture of it after I finish. I can’t believe that I waited almost 38 years to learn to knit! This is sooooo much fun - and I already want to learn crochet as well!
Have a great weekend!

HI, Chie96. I see you are in Virginia, and just wondered where? I’m in Virginia and am always interested in neighbors.

Hi! We are in western Southside HR. Nice to “meet” you!

We really are neighbors! I’m in Gloucester.
