How to cast on right needle with exisiting work

Hello - I’m 8 rows away from this next section of a baby sweater pattern and I don’t know how to do the part about casting on to the right hand needle and joining to the back stitches. This is my second knitting project ever so I’m still a newbie :slight_smile: Any pointers or links to videos :wink: would be great. Divide for sleeves-
Knit to first marker, remove it (remove all markers now as you
come to them), k 1. Now using a blunt darning needle and scrap yarn, slip all the sts between here and the next marker on to the length of yarn to hold for the left sleeve. Cast on to the right tip of the needle 7 ( 8, 8, 10) sts and join to the back sts. K across the back sts to the next marker, k 1, slip all the sts between here and the next marker on to a length of yarn to hold for the right sleeve. Cast on 7 ( 8, 8, 10) sts, join to front sts, and k to end of row. You are now working on the body sts only. Work in Stockinette st, keeping the first and last 4 stitches in garter stitch, until work measures 8 1/4 ( 9 1/4, 10 1/4, 11 1/4) ins, measured from the top of the shoulder, ending with a right side row. Work 3 ridges of garter stitch, then bind off loosely.

The pattern wants to you cast on to your existing work. You can either use the backward loop CO, or turn the needle around and use a knitted or cable CO, then turn the needle back to go on knitting. The Cast on videos here under basic techniques will show you how to do them.

Great - thanks - I’ll check them out - I wasn’t sure which ones to look at :slight_smile: Is there anything to the “join to the back” part that comes next or do I simply continue knitting and it should be obvious when I do it?

You would just continue knitting, that will join to the back.

ok just looked at the videos, and the first option is by far the easiest but out of the 3, is one better for this pattern? (i.e. when do you choose one method over another?)

I don’t like the backward loop CO much - the yarn stretches out and you end up with a couple more stitches worth. I prefer knitted CO usually, sometimes I do a purled CO (like the knitted, but you purl the sts onto the needle).
