Hi I need help on casting on stitches to make a beanie. I followed a pattern(bobble hat) which was a “one size fits all” but my beanie turned out so small it is only fit for a doll. The pattern did not say what size needles to use or what type of yarn. It is so basic. Cast on 38 stitches, knit 3 rows plain, then stocking stitch for 21 rows and then in the last row knit two together until you are left with 19 stitches.
I used size 4mm needles and chunky wool. I should have stopped already when I saw the 38 stitches but thought maybe there was method in the madness. Then I knitted 21 rows and it was still small so I carried on and knitted 21 cm instead. After sewing the finished work up it looked for like a mitten.
Okay so now I want to know how to calculate the number of stitches to cast on if my head circumference measures 26 cm. Thanks.
Welcome to the forum!
The number of sts to cast on depends on the yarn (chunky) and the needle size and critically, how tightly or loosely you knit. For a chunky yarn the usual recommendation is needle sizes 5.5-8mm (US9-11) so the small size needles may have contributed to the size.

Here’s a hat calculator that comes in handy for sts cast on and hat height and decreases for the crown.

Thank you. I have one query. Is the crown decrease included in tube length of beanie.
If the pattern gives a length it’s usually the finished length of the hat. Depending on the pattern, that’s from the edge of the brim to the top of the crown.
