How to block something a bit too big

How can you use blocking to help minimize the size of a finished project? I’ve knitted a couple of things using merino wool and for some reason, they’ve stretched when I blocked them, even though I didn’t stretch them out while blocking them. I arranged them the way I wanted to, smoothed them down a bit to make it look better, then when they dried, they were kind of big. Any suggestions?

I had that problem with a Debbie Bliss merino aran–it’s superwash. It stretched tremendously. I rewashed it and threw it in the dryer and it shrunk back some, but next time I’ll do a washed swatch.

I don’t know if this helps, though.
