How to add fingers to gloves?

Ok, this might be a silly question, but I’m a fairly inexperienced knitter and I’m having a lot of trouble understanding how to knit gloves with fingers.

I pretty much only know the very basics of knitting so far and JUST started knitting in the round. I just finished my first pair of arm warmers (actually first finished knit project EVER, yay), which are basically a very long tube that starts at my knuckles and goes up from there with slight shaping (decreasing in wrist area). Im not following a specific pattern because… so far most patterns confuse the heck out of me

Im working on a modified version of what i just made to try to make hobo gloves. I’d be happy knitting it the same way with dpn, keeping the tubing for the hand part and not having 4 individual fingers, but i dont understand how to make the thumb. I made a hole of some sort for my thumb to stick through. I didnt change the shaping of the hand, just did a back and forth kind of thing for a few rows to create the hole for my thumb to poke through.

I really want to make a hobo-glove half finger kind of thing for the thumb, but am unsure how to go about attaching such a thing to the existing knitting. Does anyone know a video or pattern that could show me in really simple terms how to do this? Are thumbs (or fingers for that matter) normally knitted separately and then attached, or are they somehow knitted right along as part of the rest of the glove?

Look at the glove and mitten patterns at www.knittingpatterncentral.com .

You’ll see that most patterns make a thumb ‘gusset’ where you increase at the base of the thumb until you have enough stitches for it. Then these are put ‘on hold’ until the rest of the hand is done and you pick them up and knit the thumb separately. Same with fingers–knit one at a time with dpns onto the hand of the glove.

the ‘gusset’ is the area where the thumb will go?

does any one know of a video that shows how to make gloves?

The gusset is where the base of the thumb goes, gets wider until you get to the actual thumb.

I don’t know of any videos, though.
