How to add buttons and button loops?

Hi there, I’ve just finished knitting a baby cardigan and the pattern says to add ties afterward, but I don’t want to do that.

I’d like to add buttons and then add button “loops” that will go around the buttons (since I didn’t create any buttonholes when I made the cardigan).

Does anyone know where I can find simple instructions on how to do this? Thanks in advance!

This might help:

It seems like matching embroidery floss would lie better than looped yarn, but you could try whichever one seems to fit better with the pattern.

Good luck!

Don’t know what your patt looks like but some will accommodate crocheting around the edge. Do a chain long enough for the button (in the appropriate position across from button) then resume crocheting the edge and repeat the chain/button loop at the next button position. You could use contrasting yarn or one a bit heavier (to ensure sturdier loops).

I did that recently, see this thread

I found easy instructions on another pattern. Make the loops by casting on say 15 stitches (depends on the size of the button), turn and cast off. Sew loops to back of button band. You may need to try a couple of times for size but it worked out well.

Thanks to everyone!

Sue in Canada, your cardigan is beautiful!
